Emmet County owns the historic McGulpin Point Lighthouse, which protected shipping on the Straits of Mackinac against storms, fog and rocks between 1869 and 1906. It was purchased by the county in 2008, which reopened McGulpin to the public with a gala celebration on May 30, 2009.

The site is approximately 10 acres and is a half mile north of the Headlands. It includes 336 feet of shoreline on the Straits with a commanding view of the Mackinac Bridge.

Trail to the Straits includes new interpretive signage coming in Summer 2015! Beautifully maintained grounds and interior. There is always something new at McGulpin Point!

Such an informative place to visit. Not only will they give you a very interesting run down on the history of the lighthouse, but the exhibits are really informative. They also do a lot to tie in the history of the town and the fort. I will certainly be returning next summer to revisit and make sure that I didn't... More

I loved this! It is a small lighthouse with volunteers that are very informative and passionate about this place. It is worth a climb to the top, what a view!! We spotted some eagles too! Be sure to take the path down to the water, another great view of the bridge. It is gorgeous! Definitely recommend this. It is off... More

The lighthouse was very nice, there were two woman working in the museum and they were very informative and helpful. It was great to climb to the top of the lighthouse and watch a freighter go through the straits. I loved the period furniture in the lighthouse and I purchased a sweatshirt and two t shirts along with a book... More

Not as large as its more well known replacement it has its good points. Vary hands on. We were able to go right to the top and out on the walk way. This is a tight fit and not handicap accessable. The rooms have been restored and furniched with peirod pieces. The land has a interesting history as well as the... More

Most people just visit the main lighthouse in Mackinaw City, but be sure to check this one, too. Just a 5-10 minute drive to the west. Great place to explore, take a little stroll down to the lake.

We just visited again hoping to see more fall color, but there just isn't much this season. Walking to the top of the lighthouse affords excellent views of the entire area. Bring your cameras! The lighthouse runs on donations.

Lovely little lighthouse and you can do a self guided tour. Nice grounds. It just happened to be raining when we arrived but we were still able to walk around the grounds.
