About
Windmill Island Gardens is home to de Zwaan windmill, the last mill allowed to be transported from the Netherlands. de Zwaan still functions by grinding locally-grown grain into flour that is sold to visitors and local businesses. A highlight of visiting is a tour of this historic working windmill. Visitors can enjoy music from our antique Dutch street organ given to the City of Holland by the City of Amsterdam after World War II. Children can also ride on our antique carousel from the Netherlands. There are several other replica Dutch buildings and shops. The Island is home to beautiful gardens which feature tulips in the spring followed by beautiful annuals and perennials throughout the summer. Please note that the Island will re-open for the 2019 season on Saturday, April 13. Last tickets sold at 5 pm.

- Kalvin HDubai, United Arab Emirates774 contributionsWow! TulipsWindmill island gardens Our first time coming here. Not how I envision it but good. People glorify the images but in reality it's a tame environment. I was expecting a magnificent display of tulips all over. In reality, they are planted in sections and in limited quantities. The windmill is huge! The area is surround by a small stream which must be used for watering the tulips. The bathrooms are located in the main building which is nice. No outhouses or porta potty. No need for extra smells to ruin the smell of tulips. They do have ONE food stand which serves a decent amount of different foods. I strongly suggest you come before the festival, because when it arrives, there is basically no parking spot available. Come and enjoy the tulips. Highly recommendedVisited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 April 2024
- JuniorNew Castle, Indiana295 contributionsBeautiful groundsEntrance fee was reasonable. Tulips were underwhelming compared to Veldheer gardens. The best features are the costumed attendants, the well kept grounds, and the amazing windmill that you could enter and go to the very top and see the entire area from above. We had lunch at the vendor and it was very expensive but portions were large and it was very good (Polish Sausage with fries). Ample parking but fills up quickly.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 May 2024

When visiting during Tulip Time arrive early, as in before the park opens. We arrived 30 minutes early got right in and did not have to fight the crowd.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 4 May 2024
- Samantha FLake, Michigan51 contributionsTulip Festival 2024Went with my mom to see the tulips for their festival. Sadily when we went on May 6th near the beginning of the festival some of the tulips have wilted. The weather has been messy from cold to warm to cold to warm but we still loved it and will go back again. The $12 it costs to get it covers everything. Children riding the marry go round, museum, and going up in the Windmill.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 8 May 2024
- Trisha G58 contributionsTulip TimeThe grounds are beautiful and the windmill is pretty amazing. We went during the tulip festival but unfortunately due to warmer weather almost all of the tulips have already come and gone. That was disappointing but could not be helped.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 9 May 2024
- Robin RChicago, Illinois34 contributions2024 Tulip TimeI went on 5/6/2024. I enjoyed my #tuliptime visit and had hoped for more lively tulips 3 days after the “show” officially opened. Nature is also unpredictable. I learned that peak tulip time was the previous week. Oh well. I had a nice time walking around and I took a lot of photos. I do what I can with my iPhone and some editing to make everything look it’s best. The weather was perfect. I was doubtful in the early morning hours as it was very overcast. Another thing we can’t control! I didn’t go in the shops as I wanted to spend my time outdoors with the flowers, grass, sky, birds. Lots of red winged blackbirds that sounded great. One day I will get to a big tulip event right at the right time! Until then, I’m happy I made the trip from Chicago to Holland, MI.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 9 May 2024
- Chris-Michelle M70 contributionsPretty5 of us went for the tulip festival, but because of the weather, the tulips were bloomed out. The windmill is beautiful, but the park seemed more geared for its gardens, which the tulips were bloomed out and the rest of the plants were just waking back up, from winter. It felt more like a children's attraction.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 12 May 2024
- Theresa LEssex, Maryland910 contributionsEnjoyed the WindmillThis was a stop on our bus tour. It was overcast and a little chilly so not as enjoyable as we had hoped. However, we still managed to walk around and get a few photos. Most of the tulips had bloomed early so there weren't many left. Our favorite part was going up inside the windmill and learning about what was done on each floor. We also thought it was a very nice gift shop.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 20 May 2024
- Cynthia KWestville, Indiana4,514 contributionsVery niceIMO this is the top tourist attraction in Holland. $12 per adult. The visitor center has 2 films. One giving the history of the town & windmill. The other was a demonstration on how the windmill works. There are bathrooms there too. There's an authentic street calliope type organ. A carousel that wasn't running the Friday we were there. A miniature village, which I really liked. The gem of the park is De Zwann (the swan) windmill, which was brought over from the Europe Holland back in the 30s or 40s. It's very picturesque & would have been more so if the tulips were in bloom. Fortunately, there were a lot of blooms from other flowers that were beautiful. There's also a gravel trail that goes around the property. There were supposed to be Friesian horses there, but they were not there. We spent an hour & a half there & I felt we saw everything we wanted. We had a pleasant time.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 May 2024
- JustalittletripPeoria, Illinois23 contributionsUp close to a real Dutch windmillThis was a lovely excursion to see the working windmill. The movies were simple but informative. They are on loops. The grounds are beautiful. We were there after tulip time, and the other flowers were gorgeous. Such a treat. Nice walk on a mild day to the windmill. The carousel horses are for children only (including teen), but adults can sit on the benches on the carousel. Only ride every half hour, one time. We did not take in any other parts of the island. Lovely place!Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 June 2024

No accommodations for handicapped seniors. Idiot at gate said that the senior we were with could wait by the ticket booth while the other three of us waited in the (actual) MILE LONG line to get back up to the ticket booth. Some nice people in line offered us to cut in, but we just left. It wasn't worth it. Also, you had better not need a restroom in a hurry. The extremely ill prepared area had TWO porta-potties for the huge crowd. There was a line of at least 60 people waiting to use them. Then the have the nerve to actually charge $10 per person to get the pleasure of actually seeing the windmill.

I would give this place NO stars if it would let me. Today we decided to go around and look at the different attractions in Holland after spending an amazing evening in town. When we got to the Island Gardens at 5:05pm we didn't realize that they stopped selling tickets at 5pm. My wife tried to ask a worker there a question because we didn't know and the response she got was one of the rudest responses I've ever heard. The lady told my wife (in the snottiest snarky voice possible) you all need to get out of here right now like we had just jumped the fence and stole something. Yes my wife was standing in the exit but if you want people to visit this place maybe your employees could maybe be a little less like A-HOLES. We will definitely will never come back here or spend any kind of money to visit the island. We can take our money elsewhere where the people are friendly and deserve our money. You would think that being that the money people spend their pay the employee wages that the employees wouldn't act like they are are burdened by the visitors. My recommendation would be to spend your money at the Dutch village the employees there are so much nicer there.

Because of the current covid restrictions not everything was open here so they are charging a reduced entry fee which I appreciated. We really just wanted to see the windmill which was magnificent up close. Despite it being a rainy day we still enjoyed walking around and there were a few really nice photo ops and interesting gift shop. If the conservatory is still in the same shape it was when we visited, I'd say skip it. Not much to see there.

My boyfriend and I spent time visiting Holland State Park and afterwards we were driving around Holland and deciding if we should stay in Holland or go to Grand Rapids. Suddenly my boyfriend James pulled into Windmill Island Gardens and I decided to check it out. What a find! We had stopped here four years earlier but didn't go inside. This time it was different. It was my Birthday and my boyfriend insisted that I spend time there myself wandering around since I get so excited when I'm in a European setting. Wow....absolutely amazing. I practically had the entire place to myself. The staff was so friendly and kind. I loved exploring the gardens and all the different buildings. I even got to ride on the carousel which was the icing on the cake since I love carousels so much. It felt like I was really in the Netherlands; the authentic replica buildings, the lush gardens and tulips, the incredible windmill, plus all the amazing Dutch products for sale in one of the buildings. The authentic carousel made right in the Netherlands, Europe was priceless, so impressive. The staff made me feel so welcome. I'm forever thankful for them for taking some video footage of me talking and some fantastic photos. There were only a few visitors when I was there and by early evening I had the entire place to myself. No crowds, so peaceful and beautiful. I felt like I had flown to the Netherlands without the jet lag. So happy to have had over two hours of bliss here and now some souvenirs as a remembrance of my fascinating experience at Windmill Island Gardens. What a magnificent birthday present this was. I love this place! Beautiful landscaping. So spotless and clean. The whole place shines with elegance and beauty.

It's just not a great time to go when it's not Tulip season. There were not many annual plants or other gardens. Only the gift shop and model room was open indoors. At least the fee was reduced to $5 but we made a loop in less than one hour and left. I would only come here during Tulip season.

Windmill Island Gardens was a beautiful experience! We were originally going to stop just to get pictures of the windmill, but approaching the Island Gardens we were very impressed and decided to walk around and enjoy this spot! The windmill was impressive along with the gentleman who talked with us about it. The garden flowers were so pretty and well taken care of. The buildings and functional organ were nice and we had a great time looking at the items for sale in the gift shop. All people who were working were so nice! One person was even whistling while he was refreshing one building with paint! This place is a MUST see!

We decided to check this place out since many things in the area are closed due to COVID, and we wanted a break from the beach or hiking. Parts of the garden are pretty and well maintained but others are worn down, flooded from high waters nearby, and some paths are covered in geese poop which made it difficult for our kids to walk around. The windmill is a neat site, we understand that the tours were not open among other things, so the entry free was inexpensive at least. The organ is neat and the gift shop is nice. The guides and employees are all very nice and courteous which made the visit pleasant, and we appreciate that they did require masks anywhere indoors for COVID. Overall, it's a cute place with nice history, but there is not too much to do or see right now.

We traveled here from Ohio because we were tired of being cooped up in our house. It was beautiful and very colorful even without all the tulips. Everything was clean and we felt safe. The price is perfect too - only $5 per person and kids are free.

$5 dollars per person to walk around a field. This place was one of the worst tourists traps I have ever been suckered in by. The main attraction is closed but you can watch a video walk through? I guess that’s a creative way to get around COVID restrictions but again we paid $5 dollars. We thought we could see the windmill running at least but we arrived just in time for them to chain it down. Average garden. Weird creepy small world vibe.

I went right before tulip time and early! The windmill in the background really makes the tulip experience all that more special. The canals were muddy and the normal festivities were muted due to Covid. Really good color and an exceptional value with the free windmill tour. I went early to avoid crowds. Cute gift shop again good value compared to other places in Holland that are touristy.

Hello,
Is this place currently opened to visitors?
Thanks in advance!

I believe the area is open for viewing, but the windmill, shops, or performances are not accessible or taking place.

Are the gardens worth viewing at the end of July? I've noticed reviews mentioning boredom aside from the windmill tour, but I'm wondering if those reviews were from people who don't appreciate flowers.

They are busy transplanting and cultivating flowers and vegetation every day. All are happy to share with you what they are up to. We loved our day there. It was beautiful and probably changed the very next day. Hope to get back and visit again soon.

Hi! Can you walk from Windmill Island to the Dutch Village?
Written 11 May 2019
I would say no. Its several miles (3.5). At least I wouldn't recomend it anyways.

Does anyone know what the parking situation is, especially during Tulip Time? Thanks
Written 18 March 2018
Get there early,
Holland City did add a parking structure, not that far away.
(There is also some parking on the grounds)

We would like to visit May 10th. It's a long drive for us and I'm concerned the tulips will be past peak. Can you please let me know the current status of the tulips? Thank You.

Hi Joyce - the majority of our tulips are in bloom right now. Cold temps help the blooms stay longer so we're happy about the cooler weather. On the 10th we should still have many tulips in bloom. Keep an eye on our website and social media for updates. Thank you!

Hi Priyanka - Tulips are currently in full bloom now. We recommend coming at your earliest convenience to see the maximum amount of tulips in bloom. It will be up to the weather as to what remains on the 2nd weekend of Tulip Time (May 13/14). We hope to see you soon!
