Staircase up to the top of the dunes with beautiful views of both Lake Michigan and lake Macatawa. I went in the off-season so I’m sure that the small parking lot coupled with the sheer amount of people that may be trying to go up and down the staircase especially this year with Covid would be concerning. However when I went it was off-season the crowds were minimal but I will say people were not wearing masks. Apparently there are trails that lead to campgrounds for the state park down below. I started down to those thinking I would go down to Holland state park. However there were too many runners again not wearing masks so I just turned around and drove to the state park and enjoyed my time there as well.

I hate steps, but there are some decent views from the top. Norhing too spectacular. There are some easy hiking trials in the woods on the dunes. The trails are well marked once you are off the wooden walkway. It maybe took us an hour to do the big loop. Minimal parking. We started at Holland State Park and walked 20 minutes there. There is a free museum about the pump house for a quick stop on the way there or back with a water bottle refill. The entrance is under the wood structure next to the small eatery.

Don’t go to Holland during a Tulip festival! It gets very crowded esp in downtown and you will be wasting a lot of time standing in lines or trying to find parking. Choose a non busy weekend/weekday to go if you are trying to stay away from crowd

Finding this trailhead can be challenging. The shelter at the trailhead is to the right of Dune Dogz - a hot dog joint on the East side of the road. Parking is another matter. You drive down to Black Lake Boardwalk or any of the other SMALL parking areas on the opposite side of the road. There's a small beach across from the Macatawa Campground that would work too. A nice weather weekend & you could be out of luck. Parking was crazy the weekend I was there.
This is the only trail at Holland State Park. Dogs aren't allowed on the stairs. There are MANY steep stairs. The view is good if weather is good. Don't bother going up when visibility is poor.
The boardwalk continues into the woods where it turns into a wide dirt trail. This is the loop part through the woods. Signage was good & it's a well traveled trail.
It was enjoyable & there was a lot of bird song.
All Trails says this is a 1.8 mile trail. I would rate it moderate for the loop & strenuous for the stairs.

This is a lovely hike up some steps to a great view of Lake Michigan. Additionally there are hiking trails in a nature preserve where the steps/view are located. It does not take long but was very pleasant. Additionally the Holland State Park is nearby.

This was a fun hike, and even all the steps were fun. We did this hike for the view of Big Red and the view of the area was very nice. We walked farther through the forest and would have even done more hiking, but it started raining a bit. The area was well kept.

We visited on a family day out, teens, parents and grandparents. It was hot and sunny and we all enjoyed the climb up the steps. There are several areas to stop and rest, if needed and the steps are not too steep.
The view of the lake,at the top, wasbeautiful and well worth the climb.

It's good hike up quite a few stairs. There are a fair amount of steps but there are platforms and some benches to rest on the way up. Though I don't recall Whether or not benches at the top to rest and enjoy scenery.
Views are decent for a few good picture opportunities.
I'd say a great place to hike up and down for a regular exercise routine .
Parking situation isn't great or easy to find. It's a walk from available parking.

If your going to the Holland State Park you won't want to miss this spot for a great view of Lake Michigan and Lake Macatawa. Before staring up the stairs, you will want to park in the Black Lake Boardwalk East Parking Lot. This lot is just west of the entrance trail for Mt. Pisgah. Parking in the middle of a summer day may not be easy in this area. Suggestion for the summertime, if you're not camping in the area or staying at a local hotel or B & B, for better parking go early morning or just before sunset (bring a flashlight for after the sun sets). It is a very strenuous hike to the top over 200 stairs, there are areas to rest along the way, but please take this into account before you start up. There is a landing/look out area at the top, stay as long as you would like. Once or twice a year, you may see the Ottawa County Parks Dept. hosting a bird/raptor watch. Feel free to join in the watch and the conversation. It is very educational. We have done this twice. Because the only way to the top is the stairs, there is bike and stroller parking at the bottom of the stairs. In the summer many of the campers and joggers in the area will make a trek to the top. Because of the dune erosion, please, please, please, stay in specially marked areas and off the dunes, as temping as it may be. Dunes are a fragile eco system in Holland, please observe this. There is a trail near the top, you can take, once again, please stay on the trail. If you want to play in the sand, head to the beach via the road or the trail. If you want to run down a dune, head to Silver Lake State Park about 2 hours north.

I saw some reviews about this being a tough climb. My husband and I are both in our early 60's and hardly fitness enthusiasts, but we made it easily to the top. There are places along the way to rest if need be. We saw a few people going up and down the stairs multiple times for the exercise, but there is plenty of room for slower climbers as well. There is parking nearby and overall we found this an easy a nice diversion on our trip to Holland.

Where do you park to access this? Is it free or paid?

Free and a small parking lot is just past the entrance on the left. Or you can park at Holland state park and walk the trail to the overlook.

Climbing the stairs at Mt. Pisgah is great for kids. There are benches on landings along the way, but my experience is that the kids do better climbing about 200 steps than the adults do.

Yes, there is some street parking as well as a lot for about 30 cars 1/4 mile west of the entrance to the path which leads to the stairway. If you are camping at the state park the beach campground is about 3/4 of a mile away, the Lake Macatawa campground is right next to it.
