Talk about a surprise! This park was just a 2 minute drive away from the AirBnB rental we stayed at during our late April weekend visit, and we happened to discover it as we passed it when we were driving home from downtown Holland. After googling info on the park, we went back in early evening. The park was nearly deserted, and fairly small -- the playground area is okay at best and the facilities are not particularly memorable. (There is a spray area for cleaning up your sandy feet, however!) But walking through the tunnel and coming out to the view of Lake Michigan was probably the highlight of our trip. Just beautiful. If it was warmer, we would have enjoyed more of a frolic on the beach itself! I imagine this gets crowded in the summer months, but it is well worth a visit.

We only went down to the water here. We didn't use park equipment. The bathrooms were not too messy and they got us through the parking line fairly quickly. It was an awesome walk thru the tunnel only to see the lake before us. The walk down to the water is pretty steep and might be challenging for some. Once you find a spot to sit, you have the sand dune behind you and the lake in front. Very cool experience. Kids running and rolling down the dune and chilly water below. We had a good time here. Saw two fighter jets fly over head and a huge ship sailing slowly. I would come back here for sure

We got to Tunnel Park at about 10am on a Wednesday. The beach wasn't crowded and we had no problem parking or finding a place to put our things on the beach.
The beach itself is pretty clean, but there isn't a lot of space between the dunes and the water. The water is relatively clean; I pulled out 3 pieces of wood that washed up near us and a dead fish did float by (that entertained some small children near us).
It was much more crowded when we left at 2pm but we'd had enough sun. The freshwater shower outside the restrooms only had one of the 4 sprinklers working, so the wait to rinse the sand off was quite long.

This is a lovely park (even during winter months). We were fortunate enough to have calm easterly winds the day we visited, and enjoyed a long walk along the shore. The “tunnel” beneath the dunes is spectacular!

The park was easily located by my tour guide Nicole. She drove us there to see the unique park. There was serenity and peace in the park. A lot of couples and old folks were seen playing with the sand and water. I felt a sense of calmness in the place.

Beautiful beach. Nice paved walkway through the tunnel. If you have any walking difficulties, you do have to go down quite a few steps to the beach and then walk across beach. They do have restrooms in the parking area. You could walk way out into the lake without it being very deep. Beach was very busy.

If nothing else, you must go to the top of the dune overlooking the lake and go through the tunnel. Beach was a little difficult to get down to due to erosion, but manageable. It was busy on a Monday afternoon, but not nearly as busy as Holland state park. The park itself it well maintained and has nice shaded parking

This beach is set on a dune and the entire thing is on an incline. It is not the easiest to get up and down, that being said it is totally manageable. The tunnel going into the beach is a cute little feature. The beach was fairly dirty the day we went, but we went in the evening, so it was probably just from that day. There is a playground, but you cannot see it from the beach. Outdoor shower is easily accessible and by the parking lot.

This is our third trip to Tunnel Park. We came on a Wednesday and it wasn’t too crowded. You do have to pay a parking fee but $8 was reasonable. The experience of walking through the tunnel and seeing the world transform from county park to beach is always a treat. (There seems to be less sand here than there has been in the past - I don’t remember the beach being as shallow. And I agree with other reviewers that walking back up to the tunnel is a little strenuous.) The park side has plenty to do, too - a spot to climb the dune, a playground, a restroom, volleyball courts, and picnic tables. We enjoy coming to Tunnel Park and look forward to returning soon.

Beautiful location. Feels like a hidden gem. Perfect spot to watch the sunset!! Small beach but plenty of room for everyone to sit and enjoy the view.
They have a playground. Bathrooms. Complementary life jackets and I'm sure lots more.

Hello! Is this a kid friendly beach? I have read so many reviews about beaches in Michigan that are having problems with underage drinking/etc. I want to bring my 4 year old to a safe beach. Thanks!

I wouldn’t hesitate to take your kids to either Tunnel Park or Holland State Park a mile or two to the south. Underage drinking doesn’t appear to be a problem at either beach. Both are very family-friendly. Holland SP has a much bigger beach area and is my favorite. Get there by 10 if possible if on a weekend.

I don't think there is at Tunnel Park but Holland State Park has a very nice pathway to beach for wheelchairs. Tunnel Park is built with a dune between the picnic/playground area. The tunnel goes through the dune with stairs going down to beach. You can go through the tunnel and sit at top and see the beach with no problem just can't go down to it.

Parking is charged Memorial until Labor Day. Generally they stop charging around 7pm each day.
Off street parking across from the park allows you to park and walk in without charge

Yes but not to the beach. The tunnel has been closed
