Detroit's Institute of Art is a gem and a treasure. For a city the size of Detroit this museum has no parallel. I have lived in Madrid, Paris, and the San Francisco Bay area, and still consider this museum the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Even if all you go to see are Diego Rivera it is well wort your time. You do not need to agree with the artist's political view to see their beauty and influence.

Impressive stadium where the Detroit Tigers play. Fans go there even if it's snowing...which it does a lot in Detroit.

Besides having a world class art collection, the DIA has wonderful events. Our favorite is the Sunday afternoon music events in beautiful Kresge Court. Great musicians are featured most weekends. I highly recommend that you check this out on the DIA web site.

Diego Rivera's murals celebrating Detroit's industrial history is stunning. We spent an hour examining it with the help of an informed docent. The museum has other excellent collections and offers interesting and challenging temporary exhibitions. The city is lucky that they managed to keep this gem, in spite of past corruption and mismanagement.

What an extensive and unique collection of work! Was disappointed that the photography section was closed for a new installation, but we still spent a whole day. The store is stocked with great gifts. But the cafe is where it's at! Trying to describe it won't give if proper justice;. It's a must visit part of your visit!

An afternoon at the museum ended all too quickly. We enjoyed the galleries which are laid out like a maze perhaps to evoke in you the feeling of discovery around each new corner and passage as well as the cafe complete with vino, light refreshments and local musicians. A perfectly relaxing way to indulge my inner art lover; definitely repeatable.
