About
Incredible vistas at every turn, the relaxing melody of water streaming out of several iconic fountains, the comforting smell of flowers in one of the many remarkable gardens, the feeling of history and architectural wonder all around you…just a taste of what awaits at Cranbrook House and Gardens, a National Historic Landmark. Cranbrook House is a 1908 estate designed in the Arts & Crafts style by noted Detroit architect, Albert Kahn, for the founders of Cranbrook, newspaper mogul George Gough Booth and his wife, Ellen Scripps Booth. From spring through fall, guests can tour the oldest manor home in metro-Detroit and the beautiful 40 acres of gardens that surround it; both maintained brilliantly by a non-profit, volunteer run organization, Cranbrook House and Gardens Auxiliary. We invite you to explore our historic estate, take a tour, join a program or attend an event. Members/volunteers and donations are always welcome as well. We hope you enjoy your time at Cranbrook House and Gardens and thank you in advance for visiting!

We visited the house and gardens yesterday. The home was not open for touring, but we walked the various gardens in about one hour. The gardens were open for free this summer thanks to several large donations. The annual flower garden was lovely, as it is surrounded by perennials gardens. There is a small herb garden that is maintained by the herb society. There are several water features to these gardens, including fountains and statues. The area near the Greek theatre seems to be under construction or renovation, as it was not well kept up. The pool looked dirty and the fountain was not working. There were many volunteers in the gardens working on cleaning up beds and plantings. It was great since it was a free tour.

I usually try to go to Cranbrook House every summer. The gardens are beautiful and are a wonderful place for a picnic. The flowers are just lovely and I also like to see all the fountains. Be prepared to spend at least a couple of hours wondering around as there's lots of nooks and crannies to explore. I believe you have to pay if you want to go into the house, but we just usually walk the grounds.

Always top drawer docents who bring the house's history alive. Lovely gardens surround the house - my favorite is the sunken garden in the spring time. The mass of tulips is just stunning!

An amazing walk back into history of the Booth family, Cranbrook Schools and the building of Detroit. Great history lessons and beautiful architecture and the gardens alone are worth the visit.

I live a half hour away and had no idea this manor existed. What a lovely and charming home. The gardens felt enchanted and so well cared for. I highly recommend a visit.

Cranbrook is a school, a trail, a science center and art center. It is free to roam the grounds and see the nature. A great place to escape to when you need some time to yourself.

Our experience at Cranbrook House was not great. WE checked in at the Cranbrook Art Museum, and they didn’t have our reservation even though we purchased tickets online in advance. At the Art Museum, they told us to meet in the gardens. We arrived about ten minutes before the tour time, but as the tour time got closer and closer with no other people or docent in sight, we started poking around. There were no signs whatsoever. I waved at a woman through a window, and she pointed me to a door across the courtyard. I found a door at the house (locked) and rang a door bell. A woman said the tours started at the home and they always started at the house, not the garden. We would have missed the tour had we stayed waiting in the garden. When I returned with husband in tow, we entered a room with a U-shaped table with chairs that were all taken. I thought I had walked into a private meeting. The group size was easily 40 people or more. They divided us into two groups and Lynn was our docent. You visit about 5-6 rooms on the ground floor and there are a number of original furnishings. The home is nice, but is also used for other functions. You don’t go upstairs. The garden is lovely to wander around, but not part of the tour. This home is worth a visit, but don’t be disappointed if you miss it. There are other home tours at Cranbrook that are far better.

We especially love to walk the rounds in the fall when the colors change and it is a little quite, my favorite place is along the fountain walkway leading up to (or down from the museum).

We have lived in Michigan our entire life and never visited the Cranbrook House and Grounds. Needless to say, it was wonderful and I would definitely recommend this to others. We had two tour guides that were very interesting and took turns providing a history of the house as well as provided additional details on the rooms we visited, as well as providing much interesting information about the Booth family. Since we visited in November we did not see the gardens in bloom but plan on returning this summer. They also have a small gift shop that is open during the warmer months. My daughter had a field trip to the Cranbrook Institute of Science when she was younger and we both enjoyed that as well.

While Cranbrook House tours are generally better suited for teens, adults and seniors, Cranbrook Gardens are great for all ages. Children especially love Weeping Zeus, a bust that actually weeps if you step on the right stone!
