Visiting the Smith College botanic garden is always a highlight when I visit North Hampton. Last spring during the Bulb Show we joined the garden to continue to support it. Highlights of the year are the bulb show in the spring and the mum-show in the fall.
Smith college is a short walk from where we stay so visit at least a half dozen times. Gardens outside are exquisite!

The botanic garden at Smith has a delightful spring and fall flower show. The show is small but truly lovely. Smith College campus is a great place to walk around and a short stroll around the water near the botanic garden is recommended.

I have been to this botanic garden three times. Once for the bulb show and a walk down the path across College Lane (March) and the other two times this summer (July and August). Each time there has been a difference in the flowers that are blooming.
I noticed that during my last visit (August) that there was not a lot in bloom in the greenhouses. The plants there are "displayed" according to climate then further by the area of the world they come from. It's interesting to see many of our common houseplants in these collections. Some of the plants are downright odd and simultaneously beautiful.
Maps are available in the reception area and there is a $2 donation requested for entrance into the greenhouses. The gardens are freely accessible at any time. The exhibition gallery has a number of educational boards with information ranging from organizations working to save species of plants to specific plants threatened with extinction. One could spend an hour reading all this information. Another section I found particularly interesting, and so will any woodworker, was the wall of wood which is composed of patchwork strips of hundreds of varieties of wood. These are numbered and identified in a brochure found nearby. There are also a couple of other displays relating to trees in this area. These are located near the restrooms.
All of the gardens are concentrated near the plant conservatory except the Capen Garden which is on the northeast edge of the campus. The arboretum is spread out over the 120 acre campus. The map for this details the locations and identifies the trees by number. There are some very large and beautiful trees which are not common to this geographical area.
I have not done the tree walking tour nor have I visited all the gardens. I will be returning soon to do this. So far my favorite part has been to walk the outdoor gardens and see what a beautiful, well maintained garden looks like. I will be going by myself the next time so I can dawdle as long as I please.

One of the many treasures on the Smith College campus. An absolutely not to be missed Northampton attraction. A transporting botanical experience. The greenhouses are immaculate and house exotic species from around the planet. Visit in different seasons to get the full experience. And grab a bite to eat at the Campus Center to round out the very pleasant campus experience.

After several years my huband and I returned to the gardens on a warm summer day. We had very mixed reactions. The greenhouse is as comprehensive as ever; the outdoor garden decent -- not as large as one might expect, but it never has been -- and wilting in the summer sun. Our main purpose was to enjoy once more the walk along the river and a quiet time sitting in the Japanese style tea house on a low knoll overlooking the river. However, the river is no more! -- only a large dry mudflat with a mere trickle flowing through it. The pathways along the old river bed were clearly not maintained and were overgrown and weedy. The tea house is completely gone. (OK the foundation is there, but no tea house. or bench, no where to sit at all along the entire path.) What was once a beautiful oasis is now a desolate dump. Phooey!

Found this garden through tripadvisor and it was worth the day trip to see. Can't beat that it is donation based and is a great escape activity for the winter time. My husband and I enjoyed the trip to the garden and even though it is small it was very nice. We arrived at the end of the day but were able to see everything with some lingering in 45 mins. or so. We enjoyed lunch downtown and then it was a hop and a skip to the botanic garden- it was a perfect combo.
We look forward to returning for bulb fest in March and see the outside gardens in the spring/summer.

A wonderful place to visit anytime, especially in the dreary Fall/Winter months. I have been to see "special" events here (rare, exotic blooming species) and especially enjoyed the outdoor gardens/landscapes. Of special note: the Spring bulb show.

It's a real beautiful experience. There are some rare type flowers there. It's amazing if you have never been. The variety of plants, flowers, trees are just magnificent. There is a foul smelling flower nick named the " corpse flower" its the Titan Arum it is native to the rainforests in Indonesia It blooms once every 4 to 5 years. You can find the flower & Botannical gardens on Youtube if you want to look at this but it's best to view the gardens in person. Unique experience! Trust me you will find it educational & amazing.

Such a beautiful place to not only walk around, but also great to sit and relax. Unfortunately, it was closed when we arrived, so we were not able to see the inside of the greenhouse. We will definitely return earlier next time to take it all in.
