Good museum with memorabilia of Harwich. Old building great kept up by Harwich. Great new addition not listed in TripAdvisor is the Elmer Crowell building. For those of you not familiar with him, he was a bird carver in East Harwich. Now dead but famous his carvings go for over $1 million. You can see his workshop and tools. Very interesting

I finally checked this place out recently, after living in the area for years. A very interesting museum, offering a slice of local history. Quite small, won't take long to visit and read all the wall plaques, etc. Add this to your sites while on vacation-or if you live here.

A beautiful early 19th-century building houses the Harwich Historical Society. Some very interesting exhibits focus on the development of the town itself at various stages in its life. The room dedicated to the Brooks Academy is intriguing with its story of the community's attempt to educate their boys who were no longer needed on the whaling ships. The first year had 28+ students under the tutelage of a single teacher, a Renaissance man who could teach English, math, history, science as well as a variety of foreign languages. The first floor displays about the cranberry industry are worth seeing with Harwich identified as a major producer of the famous red berry in its numerous bogs. The upper floor is the most intriguing with its model railroad display with trains running from Barnstable to Orleans. Members of the Nauset Model RR Society are there to guide visitors through the reconstructed towns along the way. A new feature is the woodworking shop out back, which is dedicated to a prominent Harwich carver of birds. The small park in the front of the museum is a place to relax and ponder the simpler times of the 19th century. Welcoming and knowledgeable staff in every room.

Interesting historical programs. My favorite is the cemetery walk in October. Members dress as deceased residents of harwich and as you stroll by their grave they tell you their life story and some of the history of harwich.
