The John W. Olver Transit Center, opened in May 2012, owned by the Franklin Regional Transit Authority and housing the Franklin Regional Council of Governments, has a Waiting Room, open 7 AM to 7 PM on weekdays, for bus (local and Greyhound) and Amtrak trains.

Named after long-time western Massachusetts congressman John Olver, the hub is the first zero net energy transit center in the United States. Built with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds, the facility has solar panels, geothermal wells, copper heat screens and other energy efficient technologies.

The facility has 39 short-term spaces near the building. Across the street the City of Greenfield opened a 350 space, short and long term, structured, parking garage in November 2018, which is very simple to use. Take a ticket upon entering and pay upon exiting with a credit card. The maximum charge is only $10 per day and the most convenient parking for inter-state bus and train riders.

This fall, Amtrak will be adding two new morning, southbound trains and two new evening, northbound trains between Greenfield, Northampton, Holyoke and Springfield, the first time in 52 years, half a century, that these three communities north of Springfield will have had more than one roundtrip trip per day. Now they will have three roundtrips (six trains) per day.

The new, two year Pilot Program will allow folks in Northwestern Massachusetts, Eastern Vermont, Western New Hampshire, and even Canada to experience Amtrak travel in four new ways: 1. Daytrips to Springfield, Hartford, New Haven, and New York City; 2. Single day trips along the New York City to Washington, DC Corridor five to seven hours earlier than before; 3. Single day trips to parts of the country as far away as Newport News, Norfolk, Richmond, Charlottesville, and Roanoke; and 4. Transfer to long distance trains to Florida, New Orleans, and Chicago via scenic West Virginia.

The advantages of train travel in the northbound direction is similar to those in the southbound direction as many more people will be able, in a single day, to reach Greenfield, avoiding the DC to Boston and New Haven to Springfield Corridors and heading for Northern New England and Canada the following day. These new train will be a boon to the local economy (car rentals, attractions, restaurants, and lodgings).

Because of the four new trains, the platform is being lengthened from 46 to 146 feet so that the doors of two cars can open together.
