All ski resorts in western Mass are small and Butternut's no exception. There are green, blue, and black diamond (I think double black diamonds, too, I think) trails. But they're not all well groomed, and there are always a lot of people unless you go during the week. The vertical distance from top to bottom is about 1,000'. Butternut's the... More

I visited more than once for the ski season of 2016, nice conditions and not too crowded. You have to manage the crowds, arriving early is your best bet. Some cross-overs are narrow and can be dangerous, be careful. If its crowded, its not the best skiing experience. Good place for families to enjoy themselves and learn. It's so much... More

I'm a beginner skier and Butternut isn't the best mountain for beginners. Go to Bretton Woods in New Hampshire or Wachusett Mountain near Leominster. Best to find wide runs and gentle slopes with no quick, drops. Butternut also has too many snow-boarders who run out-of-control down the slopes. I don't see the ski patrols doing anything to monitor them. Otherwise... More

I went to Butternut for 2 days. The first day I arrived around noon. You can tell from the parking lot it had rained - a lot based on the amounts of mud. When I was talking with the girl at the ticket counter, she insisted it only drizzled for less than 15 minutes but even if it had rained,... More

Unfortunately there was no fresh snow but had a great day at Butternut. Kids loved tubing and I had fun boarding- we would definitely return.

Brought my wife for her first time skiing. Bought her a lesson which give me a little time to actually ski ! It was the best think I did. She loved it and picked up some really good basic moves. She can't wait to go back. For me it was up the mountain, down and jump right back on the... More

We expected to do some tubing on our trip to Great Barrington. However, small slope for tubing was quite a dissapointment.

Despite the poor winter we've been having I was pleasantly surprised at the quantity and quality of the snow. This is a nice ski area; smaller and less challenging runs than nearby Catamount mountain. The staff here is friendly and the upper lodge accommodates people well and has good food. This place gets really crowded (as do most of the... More

We love Butternut for the convenience and friendly staff! The mountain is easy to manage and the lodges have good food.
