About
The Martha's Vineyard Museum is privileged to be the steward of three of the Island's lighthouses. The East Chop, Edgartown, and Gay Head lighthouses are not only historic reminders of a bygone age, but are working beacons that still send a light out into the night. Beyond their important functional role, these structures also offer visitors spectacular views of the breathtaking beauty of Vineyard Sound, the simple elegance of Edgartown Harbor & Chappaquiddick, and the majestic cliffs of Aquinnah. Major renovations completed in 2007, including installation of a staircase to the lantern room, allow the interior of the Edgartown Light to be open to visitors. A lighthouse keeper will be available and the doors will be open during designated hours. Parking is available, but limited, on North Water Street. The Vineyard Transit Authority (VTA) busses drop off on Church Street in Edgartown. It is a 5-10 minute walk to the lighthouse from this location.

Just a walk from our hotel, it provided many good views and photo ops. The beach and waves were fun to explore.

Although Oakbluff is cute and nice, Edgartown is amazing. Amazing coastline town with great streets, awesome houses, superbe view from lighthouse, excellent marina, cute restaurants in the harbor. The TOWN to see by far!

Great walk to the lighthouse and of course the views are terrific. There is a beach so you can swim if you can take the temperature of the water.

It was great because it was off season and not crowded. It was also nice because you could walk out right to the lighthouse, too. Unfortunately, the day I had was very foggy and you could hardly see the lighthouse even right up next to it. If you’re on the island, be sure to walk out to the lighthouse and hopefully you’ll have a clearer day than I did.

Short walk from the downtown area. Easy walk. The path to get in can be missed as it is an easement between two homes. Dogs are allowed but they need to be leashed. We went in May and the lighthouse was not opened yet.

We loved this location. We drove through town with the windows down and it's so quiet off season you can hear the birds chirping this is a definite must see

Scenic, tranquil, picturesque. We visited this location with our pup and watched seagulls dropping shells. No crowds (off-season) and easily accessible down trail in a neighborhood. Free on-street parking was a little hard to find but doable.

Didn’t have to walk too far to get to this lighthouse. Only issue is it that is was closed, due to off season, would have been nice to have gone in and walked up to see the view, but it’s ok. Next time 😀
We rode the transit bus to the area and it wasn’t that far.

Have to walk in the sand a bit if you want to go up in it. There is a great view of it from the road though. It is only $5 to climb the stairs to the top. Neat experience.

Hello, to get to Martha's Vineyard from Yarmouth you will need to drive from Yarmouth, MA to Woods Hole, MA, which is about an hour, and then get on a Steam Ship Authority boat, which will take you on a 45 minute ferry boat ride to Martha's Vineyard.

Hi. Is the Edgartown Lighthouse reachable by the VTA bus ? If not, how many blocks or minute-walk would that be from the bus stop. We're going there this Labor Day weekend. Thank you so much.

Not a far walk at all. I'm in my 70's and had no problem. Easy walk and lovely homes with great architecture. Enjoy!
Where is hotel from ferry

Brooke, Do you mean the Harborview Hotel that is located across from the Edgartown LIghthouse? It depends where you take the ferry to—closest would be Oak Bluffs rather than Vineyard Haven. From there you can grab a MV bus that will take you to the Lighthouse and the hotel.

Did they charge you going up or going down?

One or the other, depending upon whether or not the guide is explaining something to another person as you enter. It's a very small space, not easy to miss someone who hasn't paid. Remember, the $5 fee (free for kids under 12) pays for both staffing and maintenance of the lighthouse -- no small feat, exposed to the wind and salt air.
