Very interesting exhibits. Original Dedham Pottery. WWII exhibit, personalized with photos & memorabilia of Dedham residents. Beautiful paintings, a bell created by Paul Revere, that hung in the court house, very old furniture pieces. Good take if you enjoy history. They had a lovely gift area with pottery in the style of the original Dedham pottery. Johanna was very helpful and knowledgeable.

We had an afternoon free when we were in Dedham and looked around for a local attraction. Since I love old American pottery, we zeroed in on this little gem of a Museum. It is open only noon - 4 p.m., but you can fully cover it in just over an hour. The collection of mainly Dedham Pottery is housed in a lovely old building, which was built in 1888. The history of this New England village is explained in all sorts of artifacts and historical items. Very nicely set up. You can also obtain a booklet (free) for a self-guided tour of historic Dedham village. We did that too and it was wonderful as you get to see all these magnificent buildings and houses and breathe in history. Everything very clearly (and briefly) described in the 15 page booklet. Parking is a bit of a problem thereabouts as the Norfolk County Courthouse is right there and much of the parking is restricted. There is metered parking, and as they seem to be replacing their meters (a bailiff told us) much of them are broken. When we were there in August, most meters did not work, and we got to park for free. This little treasure of a Museum should be visited if you like Museums or old pottery.

One of the best collections of early American history. DHS is a museum, a gift shop and a research library. Hopefully they will put a sign outside to spell that out so that more folks will find this treasure. The oldest wooden chair made in America is on display -just one fun highlight!

I love this place. This probably because I love Dedham. I went there for the first time, and learned so much about this history of the area. So much of the local history is on display, and as noted, it becomes not only enlightening, but educational. A must visit.

I visited to do some research and the people were very nice and helpful in their interactions with me and with the several other people who came in while I was there. I was a little taken aback that they seem to run like it was still 1970 with everything on paper and in books, which is fine, but it seems that the documents would be better preserved and more usefully accessed if they were available electronically as well.
You can enter and ask a quick question for free, but if you want to do extensive research they ask you to join as a member, which seems more than fair.
It is worth a visit just to see the exotic old brick building they inhabit. They often have locally based exhibits on the ground floor while the research library is in the basement.

If you love Dedham Pottery this is THE place to visit. Their collection is amazing. They also have a fascinating collection of early furniture. The visit may be short but worth the trip.

The DHS has a small museum, usually one rotating exhibit, and a library and research facility for serious work on Dedham area history. Good place to stop if one is serious about Dedham area history. Also a place for research. Staff is helpful if you want to browse through old records.
Not a place for children, I'd say.

What lovely people, people who were more than helpful.
I was research an ancestor who who emigrated to Dedham from England in 1650.
I found a treasure trove of items, which I could only quickly peruse.
One of the gems was a letter from England from 19 century, with a brown “Victoria “ postage stamp on it.
Another gem was the coat of arms for the ancestor was on the wall.
And wishing the archival documents were the notes, from the author of the family history. You could see the reference material obtained for the research.
The staff and the researchers were so accommodating and I really appreciated their help
The exhibits within the society museum, you could see had been collected over time and helped to tell the story of the town from its beginnings.

We spent two days researching ancestors who were early Dedham settlers. The staff couldn't have been more professional and helpful, with special thanks to archivist Sandra Waxman, who spent several hours with us.
