I had no idea that Danvers was originally Salem Village and an important location in the Salem Witch Trials. We stopped here before we started for home and it was worth the trip. It is a very informative memorial in a residential area. It list all the names of those persecuted and date and means of death. I found it very interesting. Plan on spending about 1/2 hour.

People flock to Salem to experience a romanticized or sensationalized version of the witchcraft hysteria. But the event started in Salem Village, present day Danvers, Massachusetts. This memorial is literally a few hundred yards from where it all began. There is nothing exciting, glamorous, or sensational here; just a solemn memorial to the men and women who were accused of witchcraft in frenzy of fear. Many were executed; some died waiting for trial before reasoning prevailed. This memorial tells the true story of a dark hour in our history. I am always touched when I visit here.

Constructed in 1992 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the start of the Salem Witch trials, this is a moving memorial to the twenty-five innocent people who were cruelly put to death.
Danvers, and not Salem, is the place to visit if you want to see where the witchcraft hysteria began. Danvers, not Salem, used to be called Salem Village. In addition to the Witch Trials Memorial, don't miss two other witchcraft attractions in Danvers --The Rebecca Nurse Homestead, and the Samuel Parris Archeological Site.

It's such a humbling experience to see this memorial and all the names. There's not much around but worth the trip.

Worth visiting. In the middle of a residential area, erected to remember all of the unfortunate residents caught up in the 1692 witch trials.

The first and only memorial to all of the victims of the 1692 Witch-Hunt (including those who died in jail). Sobering monument to all of the innocents who suffered and died. Erected by the Town of Danvers (formerly known as Salem Village) in 1992 to mark the tercentennial of the Witchcraft Delusion. It's across the street from where the Salem Village Meetinghouse once stood (the location of many hearings/examinations for those accused of witchcraft).
Parking on the street. Open dawn to dusk. Near other 1692-related sites in Danvers such as the Rebecca Nurse Homestead, and the Rev. Parris Parsonage Site.

This memorial cites all those persons who were accused and killed during the witch trials (dark side of American history). A must see if you are in this area of the world. The site and surrounding area is where a lot of this happened. Lots of information is archived at the Peabody Institute (a/k/a the Danvers Public Library/978-774-0554).

Danvers is really where the witch hysteria went down (formerly known as Salem Village, as opposed to Salem Town, now Salem). They play down the "witch" tourism, but did put up this memorial. It's a memorial not only to those killed (like Salem's), but to ALL the victims, including those who died while in prison and who were arrested and jailed but eventually got out, their lives ruined. This memorial really makes you realize that the hysteria destroyed the lives of far more than the 20 executed.
