With its rough-hewn oak beams, colonial chandeliers, many-paned windows and wide oak floorboards, the interior resembles the Old Ship Church in Hingham, Mass. In this appropriate setting, you will find a scale model (made by Dard Hunter) of the vat house of the first Crane mill, as well as some of the tools Zenas Crane used from 1801 to 1831. In wall and floor cases, exhibits trace the history of American papermaking from Revolutionary times, with special emphasis on the durable, distinctive Crane papers made for currency, bonds, stock certificates and elegant stationery.

We have just opened our new Center for the Paper Arts. See how paper was mad in the old days. Make some paper yourself. Several cool art projects as well.

After reading reviews, my husband, adult daughter, and myself went to the Museum. It was great! Tour guide was excellent. Gave us lots of information. He was funny and used audience participation. Video presentation was very good. After the video and talk, we went to the back room, where the tour guide gave some hands on demonstrations, which would keep... More

We've been vacationing in the Berkshires for five years and always passed up this museum because it's brochure is uninteresting. So when we ran out of other places to go on a rainy afternoon, we finally ended up here. What a mistake. We should have gone here years ago. For a small museum, it was very well done. The videos,... As a Brooklyn artist in search for an artistic, relaxed atmosphere I found the paper making laboratory at Crane Museum the perfect spot! It is great to work with Peter and interact with visitors and enthusiastic children!

I have worked for Crane Currency since the 1990's. The Crane Museum of Paper making is a great introduction to this historical manufacturing site along with the technologies that were used here. Crane is the oldest existing family owned manufacturing business in the USA having been established here in Dalton, MA in 1801. Crane Currency has been the sole supplier... More

On a winter get-away and saw the museum sign while driving through Dalton. Ended up being the highlight of our trip. Peter our guide was extremely informative as to the history of paper making and especially the making of U S currency paper by the Crane Paper Company. A thoroughly delightful visit! A must if your in the area!

Interesting video presentation, as well as Q and A with former Crane employees plus paper making demonstrations. NOT a factory tour. Long history of this company. Also a small shop that sells stationary products.

Amazing learnings about how paper is made, how currency is made and printed as well as a historical overview of the mill. Can't say enough good things about the curator, he's a wealth of knowledge. Make sure you ask him a lot of questions...he'll have the answers to most of them! Getting there close to 1pm may endure a private... More
