About
Maryland's distilling roots run deep. Prior to Prohibition, Maryland proudly produced what was widely regarded to be the nation's finest whiskey, a distinct style called Maryland Rye. During the 13 years of Prohibition, Maryland's enterprising farmers continued to turn their plentiful harvests into high-proof "swamp lightning" in stills hidden among the coves, inlets, and marshes of the Chesapeake. Oystermen and crabbers smuggled the "good stuff" up and down the Bay, evading Federal Revenue agents and the Coast Guard, finding safe haven among the close-lipped communities that lined the tidewater. But rarely did they face harassment from local authorities. Maryland, the only state never to enact a Prohibition enforcement law, was known as the "wettest state" during the 13 years of national Prohibition. It was during this time that Maryland figures such as Governor Albert Richie and author and Baltimore Sunpapers columnist H.L. Mencken rose to national fame for their vehement opposition to what they viewed as an egregious overreach of Federal authority, and rumrunners like Pete "King James" Kelly rose to infamy. At Blackwater Distilling, Maryland's first fully-licensed beverage alcohol distillery since 1972, we celebrate this brash, enterprising, and fiercely independent spirit, as well as the farmers, bootleggers, and rumrunners who kept the "good stuff" flowing while the rest of the nation ran dry. Like the enterprising farmers and watermen of the 1920s and 1930s, it is our mission to produce the highest quality spirits from quality, local ingredients, preserving one of Maryland's finest traditions.

Stopped here because of the reviews on TA, and LOVED it! The server was so nice, and really knew his stuff, but you have to deliver with the product, and they do in spades! Wish this place was close to my hometown, GO THERE!

We had a good time our first trip there. The place looks great, very friendly bar tender and along with their own distilled drinks they also have a lot of Maryland brewed beers and local wine. We're told they will be having outside seating soon and eventually moving the distillery to this location so it's just going to get better. Also, there is food from a local food truck that you can order from the bar and have brought in to you.

We had a Groupon for a tour and tasting, but we will go back again soon without any extra incentive. We enjoyed a very knowledge-packed tour by one of the owners, and we tasted SO many excellent varieties: vodka, whiskey, and rum. Wow! We are excited to learn that they will be opening a tavern on Route 50 next month. Their products are superb!

We didn’t want to sit around or go Black Friday shopping soooo...we went to the distillery!! Chris gave us a private tour and explained the differences between Vodka, Rum, and whisky. We tasted some amazing flavors!! We look forward to going back when they build their new tasting room. Oh, and...shhh...we bought a few Christmas gifts....So I guess we did go shopping after all!!

Yes, the place is small. No, it doesn't have the ambiance of a fancy winery. BUT, if you really want to learn about distilling and creating liquors, make sure to visit Blackwater Distilling. They are truly passionate about their craft, and it shows. You don't feel rushed. The tour does not feel like a canned presentation. And, if the questions from the group show some knowledge of the process, your tour guide is more than willing to talk in depth. But, if you do need ambiance, Blackwater plans to open a new facility in 2019. Our Royo had so much fun that they immediately started planning another visit.

As part of some 'me-time' for my personal vacation enjoyment, I decided to hit up Blackwater Distilling to take the tour and I got my wife's cousin to come join me. When we went, their operations were still in the business park; I don't know if they've moved since then although I remember discussing that it was in the works.

For $5, we were able to go through a tasting and a tour. Our guide was great in describing the details and differences between the liquors, while also providing details of the origins of their name and the names of their products (Picaroon/Sloop Betty, etc). We did a lot of the talking while we were sitting down and sampling, although we did take a very quick jaunt to the still and filter area.

All I have to say is that coffee rum was knock your socks off good. You want to talk about dangerous, I could easily drink a mug of that sweet goodness before the alcohol punches me stupid and I can't figure out where I am. Drink with caution!

Based on the tour and the tasting, I ended up bringing home a bottle of the honey vodka and the coffee rum, along with some coffee beans that were stored in some of their rum barrels. I've gone through my bag of coffee as well and the smell of the beans is heavenly. The rum notes come through even when it is brewed and it was definitely an enjoyable treat. The rest of my bottles are just a part of my bar, although I hesitate to use them and bust them out when I want to treat myself.

I hate that I live so far away. I visited the website, saw some of the projects they're working on and I really could see myself being more involved if I just lived a little closer. If anything, they opened up my interest in finding local distilleries near me that are seeking to do some creative things here and there.

Drink up me hearties, yo-ho!

I love that this is a family owned and operated business, and they are going all out to make it an awesome place to visit! Right now, not so much to see. We did the sampling of all there spirits. Do love the COFFEE one! I think that once they get the renovation completed this is going to be great. Wish them the best of luck.
