- Mark HIrvine, California696 contributionsQuiet, wooded trails near the riverGood to come back! Lush and green. Enjoyed the Grist Mill, Historic Walking Trail, Ridge Trail, a path along the river on the path of the railroad, and parts of other trails. I parked near the Mill and joined the HWT. One entrance is marked by a small sign opposite the Mill to the right of a stone trough. I walked the Ridge Trail southeast and parallel to the river. The Ridge Trail connects to the river road near the boat ramp and Lapidum Road. The trail is occasionally steep and took me about eighty minutes. I then walked back to the Mill along the river road. You could do the same, arrange for someone to pick you up near the boat ramp, or walk up a short steep trail to the Stoneridge Farm; the restrooms were open even though the Farm was closed. After two wet weeks, each trail was walkable. No traffic, vehicle noise, mud, biting insects, or ticks! Saw a whitetail deer and heard shy wildlife.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 19 May 2024
- Pete ZMenomonee Falls, Wisconsin22 contributionsMagical stay in the woodsHome base camp for this year's East coast camping trip. Six nights of camping with day trips to to neighboring states. The heavily wooded paved roads into the park are narrow but well maintained. The campground has two loops with centrally located restrooms with showers. Very quiet and nearly empty on weekdays. Full on weekends. Bathrooms were very clean, well maintained and surprisingly cool during the excessive heat we had. Our site was not very level and had lots of tree roots to watch out for but we got our popup camper perfectly level. All sites are very shady, which helped keep us cooler. The ranger's little building has very minimal camping supplies and gifts. The ranger could not be friendlier if he tried. Like being greeted by family! There is no phone signal worth talking about, so we checked in for weather updates. Spent one day walking the trails in 95° heat with high humidity. A three shower day! Very few bugs except for fireflies/lightning bugs!!! There were practically millions of them. I felt as though I was in some enchanted Disney scene. Their twinkling was from the ground all the way up to the tops of the biggest trees. Tried pictures and videos to no avail. The grist mill was closed for repairs and the farm had storm damage that required safety clean up, so it also was closed. Saw one deer and racoon popped up next to me during our camp fire, that quickly scooted away. A great place to stay.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 July 2024

The bath houses are not new but they are clean and functional. The boat ramp is quiet and very easy to navigate. The hiking trails are great. Some have a challenging incline with rocks, which appreciate. These are more difficult than others in the area and are fun for a good workout.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 August 2024

We stopped here on our way to PA. Campsites were not as level as other parks and there were rowdy guests that no one seemed to check on. We went over and told them to tone it down which they did for awhile. Nice park but due to Covid places were closed. River was nice to view.

We visited Susquehanna State Park to walk along the water and visit the historic sites in the Rock Run area. There is a pamphlet on the internet with information about the historical sites and there are historical markers as well. The trail is easy to approach and not "difficult" as mentioned on some websites. It is a good place to walk around safely during Covid times and then drive into Havre de Grace to see the lighthouse, enjoy ice cream or a meal, or just walk by the water.

Very hard to reach through some harrowing narrow country roads. And the sites themselves are a teeny claustrophobic. But once you got on a trail and headed for the creek or river you were richly rewarded. We hiked down to the creek and had a great time swimming with kids and dog.
Hint - Ignore the warning that the trail that jogs right is “very difficult”. Actually a more direct route to the water. And you are rewarded with walking by a Maryland Trophy Tree.

The Mr and I spent 3 nights in a camper cabin. They were a bit smaller than some we’ve been in before- no inside table. Had AC which we weren’t expecting. Would like to have a State Park stamp- but none available. The park was nice, pretty areas to walk.

We booked this park months ahead of our trip for a family of 6. When choosing the site, we carefully reviewed the information available on the web about each site.
We were surprised that there is a non-refundable PER NIGHT fee when you reserve the site. Most state and federal parks have a non-refundable fee for the transaction and it is typically $3-9. Our fee or 3 nights was $13.68. If you cancel or change the reservation, it's another $6. To cancel my 3-night reservation, I'm paying $19.68!
We stopped by the campground on our way home from another trip. The park was tricky to get to and does not have the best roads. We were shocked to discover how tiny ALL the sites are at this campground. We have a family size tent and it would not fit on the pad. We asked a ranger if we could bring two smaller tents to put one on the pad and one next to the pad. She said absolutely not. The tent pads have the campfire ring, picnic table and lantern post and leave a 8x8 or 8x6 size area for the tent.
If you have a small tent - 4-man or smaller, this park would be fine.
The bathrooms are clean and nice. We found it odd that there is a porta potty in the parking area near the bathhouse, suggesting they may have too few bathrooms? Additionally, nearly every site on the inside of the Acorn loop has a trail that leads to the bathhouse. The ranger said the outside loop people typically cross the road and go through the site to get to the trail to go to the bathhouse and they do not use the roads.
We were very excited about the outdoor opportunities this park has to offer. We are saddened that it appears to be catering to the people who are solo, a couple or maybe 3-4 total per site. If we lived closer, we'd absolutely visit for the day.
The reservations person was less than sympathetic and unwilling to work with us at all. We've cancelled our reservation and will not return to any Maryland State Park without previewing it before making a reservation!
The sites we would consider with a smaller tent:
22 - okay, requires camping alongside main road
24 - okay, requires camping alongside main road
50 - nice, set off the main path, very private, short walk in
54 - okay
59 - nice, not visible from the road, semi-private, shared space with 61

64 - nice, no privacy
68 - nice, lots of shade

My husband and I were looking for a short weekend camping spot, and were pleasantly surprised by our trip to Susquehanna State Park. There are several short (2-3 mile) hiking loops that had some uphills to get you out of breath (but not too challenging for our older dog). You can also walk for several miles along the river which is also a pretty view. We brought our tent and stayed in the Acorn loop (#67). It was pretty full even in mid-September, mostly family groups with small children. The camp sites were well-kept with a picnic table, fire pit, trash hook, and place for our camp stove. Sites with higher #'s (>50) tended to be tucked away off the road especially our little group of 3 site (65-67) which were a short walk from the car but that made it nice and quiet without traffic going past. We walked through the Beechnut loop, and found most of the campsites on that side were directly next to the road, so we were glad we had selected the other side. The bath houses were very new-looking and well-kept, with automatic sinks and hand sanitizer. This made for a very pleasant experience.

This park is a quaint place with some uniqueness. The camp ground offers several options from a non electric tent site to RV and mini cabins with A.C. We really like the option to go tubing and spent a day floating around. The water is cool, clean, and crisp and not to rough or deep. It's a,bit tricky to find but if you need just ask because it's a family freindly area.

Are you able to ask the staff about the tubing put in and out locations? Can you describe where the tubing takes place in relation to the campsites? How long was the tubing, miles/hrs, would be incredibly helpful.

Did not observe tubing during my visits

Yes. They have 69 camping sites, six to eight of which that are electric. They also have six camper cabins. There are two main loops where these sites are located. Each loop has a bathhouse, a dumpster and multiple water spigots. There is a playground and an amphitheater between the loops.

Any specific campsite recommendations that are more spacious then others and private. We have a tiny camper and it's just the 2 of us. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are there any buildings available to take pictures in if it happened to be raining? We're trying to meet family for family photos and this is about halfway for each us. We only have one date available and we'd all be driving about 2 hours each way. Thanks in advance!

Only if Rock Run Mill or Rock Run Mansion happen to be open on the day you are there. The other option would be Steppingstone Museum, which is located on Park property.
