St. John’s is Havre de Grace’s oldest church and one of the oldest surviving structures in the city. In 1805 a small wooden chapel was built, but this was blown down by a storm. The current building was started in 1809, but suffered damage during the War of 1812, and later by a fire. The history is written and depicted by a plaque on the entrance lawn. It apparently took.until mid century to finalize the structure. A parish house was added in 1901, followed by an additional structure. St John's Towers behind the church is apparently a retirement home. The simplicity of the church buildings and grounds is restful. The stars in the blue ceiling above the altar are impressive as is the external brickwork and the open belfry. A tree honoring Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad was planted in front along Union Avenue in 2019. This is an important stop on the tour of Havre de Grace Historic District (listed on the National Register of Historic Districts).
