My family and I chose this as the first hike of our trip, and it was a perfect choice! At only 1.4 miles with 284 feet of elevation gain, most people should be able to finish the loop. Even though this trail is rated as...More

This is a great hike for kids who are new to hiking. Easy to follow trail. The granite "steps" in the woods leading up to the top are like something out of "The Hobbit".

Flying Mountain is described as a moderate level hike. Good hike and beautiful views. We're active seniors and had no difficulty with the hike.

Some of the trail was closed due to the falcons—understandable. During the beginning of the hike we could hear loud chain saws and other heavy equipment—irritating.

This is a great hike. We walked the gravel path first to the beach and we were the only ones on the beach when we got there. Then we climbed the mountain on the way back. I think this is the best way to go....More

Great hike up to the top for great views of Somes Sound. It's not a huge, epic hike, but the views and the hike are terrific. Keep going down to Valley Cove to put your feet in the water. Loved the actual trail--steep at the...More

This is a short, fairly easy hike, yet you get to the top of a mountain. We hiked on a misty, foggy morning and still got some incredible views when the breeze blew the mist away. I imagine it would be spectacular in the sun....More

We love to do Flying Mountain because it is relatively easy. It's one of the shortest mountains, but the view of Somes Sound is so lovely that it is worth the trip. Parking is scarce, though, so I would recommend going either very early in...More

Cloudy/ foggy day, but still a great loop to hike with kids. Easy to slightly moderate, sneakers for sure and hiking sticks if you want them. Loved this trail!

Lots of roots across the trail would make rough footing and there are some high steps up and down rocks to get to and from the summit. Certainly not a difficult climb but it might not be paw friendly.

Remember, the island is not that big. Pick a campground that you like best for the overall amenities or for proximity to the island shuttle bus system. Flying Mountain Trail doesn't connect to much else; I wouldn't camp... More

From the parking lot it's probably about 15 minutes to the top for a reasonably fit adult or older child, then another 20-25 down to the cove. The fire road from the cove back to the somethingparking lot is about 10 minutes.
