We were told about this beach while on an excursion. It’s out of the way to say the least. I would have never found this if it wasn’t for google maps. At times I felt like I was invading a private neighborhood beach. We were glad we went. As of this post the bathrooms weren’t open after 5pm.

I've lived in Maine for 14 years and Willard Beach is one of my favorite places. At high tide, there isn't much beach, but at low tide, the beach is spacious and the bay is much warmer. This beach is clean, there are life guards, a great snack shop and clean public restrooms. It's a locals beach so there are rarely any tourists there. Mainers are very friendly, I've often spent hours at the beach conversing with people I just met. It's VERY kid and family friendly. I gather that some may want a fancier beach that caters more to tourists, but so much of coastal Maine caters to tourists that we enjoy the few things we can keep for ourselves. Willard Beach is one of those. Tourists are definitely welcome, just don't expect a gift shop selling Willard Beach t-shirts or postcards. Another thing I like is that people are respectful of one another and they keep a good eye on their children. This is one of my favorite beaches in the entire world, and I've been to quite a few in my travels.

My kids' favorite beach! Willard has sand, sea, and best of all a brand
new PlayGround right on the beach!! The surf is much lower than most
other beaches making it great for young children. (If you are looking
to swim and play in large cascading waves, head to a less sheltered
beach.) It is a relatively small beach, making it easy to keep track of
the kids. There are public restrooms. And the food stand has a huge
variety of kid friendly foods and treats (ice cream, candy, etc). It is
true that the sand is somewhat rough and there are rocks in the water.
But the big highlight for my kids (3 & 6) is the brand new Play Ground
right on the beach. It is clean, safe, and loads of fun. What's more,
you can supervise one child on the playground and another in the water
so everyone is happy!
** For adults and/or tourists looking for a "beautiful" classic beach with fine sand and crashing waves, check out Crescent Beach, Pine Point, or Old Orchard. For scenic rocky coast vistas and awesome Maine seafood, check out the Lobster Shack at Two Lights State Park. Walk the rocks, visit a lighthouse, but don't miss the lobster and seafood, take-out style, at picnic tables overlooking the beach! For the kiddies, we love Willard Beach! Enjoy your time in Maine!

Willard Beach uses the same waters frequently traveled by ships in and out of the nearby harbor. Hence, you really don't want to swim in such waters. In fact, whatever these ships do leave behind, also travels as far as Freeport's beach areas. I would not recommend this beach except for sunbathing--and, only if you don't have a better place to go.

Nice place to bring the children w/playground, snack bar, lifeguards, and bathrooms. First time visit, limited free parking. Shallow waters and safe harbor.
Near Portland where we were staying.
Go wading or for a swim, with a pretty view.
Public beach with no dogs allowed during the day. It was a fun stop on our way home!

This beach is so much fun if you’re a dog lover. Our dogs found many new friends to play with and everyone was willing to throw a tennis ball for our fetch addicted Golden Retriever.

This beach is just a few mins walk from my Airbnb on Preble St. We were hoping to see the 4th of July fireworks. Unfortunately there were so many bugs on the beach. There were lots of seaweed too. Overall just an average beach.

What a wonderful spot - out of the way and not crowded. Had been to Scarborough earlier on this very hot day, but it was very windy, so we ventured to Willard. I had my granddaughters with me (17-4) and it's wonderful to have restrooms & snack shack so close.. For little ones it's perfect - very gradual decline so very safe - you can see the portland breakwater lighthouse to your left & if you venture out a bit, you can see portland lighthouse to your right... We will be back for sure

We live 3 blocks from Willard Beach. It is a wonderful resource. We walk our dog along the beach almost daily, all year around. Dogs are prohibited on the beach in summer, except from 7-9 am and 7-9 pm. This starts May 1 and ends Nov 1. Parking can be tight in the summer. Many boats are moored here and the beach is quite gradual for swimming.BUT, remember that the water temperature seldom gets above 65 degrees, and that's in August. So, be prepared for a sort dip, unless you wear a wetsuit.
southern Maine Community College, which once was Fort Preble, is right next door. Some of the fortifications and gun mounts are still in place. Finally, there is a spectacular rock breakwater which leads out to Spring Point Lighthouse. This is right in the middle of Portland Harbor and has fabulous views of Casco Bay, the boats and the islands. It's about 300 yards long and well worth the hike. This is a great beach.

Up the street, loved being able to walk and enjoy this beauty of a scene! Easy walk to bug light, you can see
A couple civil war forts across the way. Watch fisherman boats come
In and out of the bay.
Some bench seating available to watch a working lighthouse.

How long is the walk from the beach to the Spring Point Lighthouse?
Written 14 July 2018
I’d say about 1.5km because you have to walk around the university to get there.

Is this beach dog friendly year round, including the summer months? I'm reading different things on different sites.
Written 28 February 2017
No. During the summer, dogs are restricted to 7-9 am and pm, and not in between. If you can live with those times, it's fine.

No, but there aren't a lot of parking spaces. There's about a 15-20 parking options.
