We went to the public beach on three occasion last summer, and despite all the signage that no dogs are allowed at the beach - dogs are always running around. If you try and point it out to people, they just shrug. The City of Rockland seems to do nothing about it. Love dogs - just not their waste from careless owners, as well as unknown dogs running around my kids.

We live next to this lake. It is spring fed, and, according to my oldest son, stocked with trout. It is beautiful to look at. However, it gets very crowded in the summer and the water quality is not tested on a regular basis. IF you call the town, they may tell you that it has been tested...if they do, ask for the results. Most swimming areas are tested for bacteria throughout the summer. Rockland does a poor job of monitoring the water quality for this lake, and with the number of people using the beach area, it should be tested on a weekly basis. There are bathrooms and a grassy area for people to picnic on or to play volley ball- those are the positives.
Camp buses are often seen here. I would not recommend this swimming area unless it is early morning, or you can't make it to any other beach.
Rockland/Camden is on the coast, why not go to Laite Beach in Camden or Lincolnville Beach in Lincolnville? There is a nice little beach at Walker Park in Camden as well. Megunticook Lake is nice, but the beach area is crowded. I believe Megunticook is tested for water quality, call Camden town office to find out. Shirt Tail Point and Hobbs pond are monitored for water quality, try those as well.
One last opinion...the crowd at Megunticook is more suited for families...Chickawaukee Lake...not as much.

Last we heard, the water quality was so-so due to nitrates leaching from surrounding farms. In an area with pristine lakes, this isn't the best choice. Try the public beach with the spectacular cliffs at Megunticook Lake. It's 10 minutes down the road in Camden and worth the drive. Other smaller lakes in the area have prettier beaches. If you have the time and want a perfect Maine lake with sandy beach, drive 25 minutes to Jefferson and the Damariscotta state park. Kids love it.

about the only fresh water place in rockland to go to that is free, but there is always a ton of kids there. and I mean young toddlers in diapers in and out of the water. It is not clean if you can understand what I am saying. Mostly locals.

This lake is very large and scenic. The beach is at the southern end of the lake, and right off the road, which some people don't like because of the noise of the cars driving by, but you can easily tune that out. To be sure, there is a nice safe place to park, and you don't have to hike in. It has a sand beach, bathrooms and changing rooms (that are dark, so bring a flashlight), picnic tables, and grassy area. The dock is out in the lake and you can swim out to the dock and jump and dive off of it. Some people are complaining that it's noisy, or that there are teens and children there. I liked the family atmosphere of the place, and I didn't mind the dogs either. Maine is so much more loose and less uptight about dog leash laws, which is why I like going there. Even with dogs, it's still a very clean beach. We went late in the day, before sunset, almost every day of our vacation, and it really put the calm in our day.

If you want something more remote, and there are many places in Maine that are remote, you're going to have to go further away for it, and maybe park your car on the side of a road - dangerous!!! - and hike in.

This is a local beach, looks like a great spot to take a quick dip. It is awful! Teenagers making out in plain view of kids, using the water as a restroom--and there are facilities there. Animals in and out of the water. Stay away!

We were exploring Rockland and enjoyed the peacefulness of Chickawaukee Lake to stretch our early morning coffee in hand walk-about. Clean and picturesque and convenient, too.

I use to live near by and spent many hours all year long on the lake. It has a decent public swimming area nad boat launch but the lake is fairly small and can be busy during summer and winter months.

I frequently stop by here for a summer swim and yes there are people there enjoying themselves because it is beautiful and convenient. I sometimes swim early mornings when it is quiet after dropping my son off to camp. I like to hang out with the ducks in the water! I am very grateful there is a local swimming place with bathrooms and a place to change.
