    Make the effort to visit
Mr. Jim Sharp himself makes the experience 5* He is a 90 year old mariner so dedicated to maritime life, he created the museum with his own collections, His history is amazing and worthy of a Grand Champion Award. We had a private tour with Jim who told many many stories and had explanations for navigational instruments and how they were used. Walking through his rooms of displays is eye opening. It's authentic, not a typical touristy thing! In fact, there isn't a gift shop, although once you are taken with Mr. Sharp, you will want to by his book!

    A unique museum experience
This was a fascinating museum, full of remarkable information and displays. You can have a guided electronic tour of the museum that helps navigate not only the space and the multitude of artifacts, but some of the history of ships. (Without that video, the museum might have been overwhelming because there is so much to see, and you definitely would not appreciate some of the artifacts without the narration explaining it.) Definitely worth the time to visit!

Facinating sailing history, artifacts, and more
This is a "do not miss museum." Captain Jim spent his career pursuing his love of all things sailing. The museum contains much history of his extensive sailing knowledge and old ships, which he overhauled and sailed. Also are many historical artifacts and essential sailing related gear. A hand held video of Captain Jim walked us through the museum providing a good overview in an hour. For a deeper study I'd recommend returning to the rooms and items of most interest. FYI this is not just a museum. They teach sailing lessons on a variety of boats including free lessons to local children in the summer. Sunday afternoons host local musicians who show up to jam together, which we also enjoyed.

    Maritime must!
Amazing displays of maritime importance and told by a real schooner master! The displays span decades of maritime history and shipbuilding. There are also navigational displays from Bowditch’s astrolabe to modern radar and GPS.

    A wonderful rainy-day activity
This was a fantastic museum chock full of interesting maritime artifacts from all eras of sail. Captain Sharp was incredibly knowledgeable and the wealth of information present in both the free guide and the placards made this a very enriching experience. I will certainly be back!

The Sail Power and Steam Museum is not just the finest small maritime museum I've ever visited: it's the finest small museum, period. It has a wonderful collection in excellent condition, including a number of historically significant original objects that one wouldn't expect to find here. The descriptive material is well-written, accurate, and entertaining. Everything is very well organized to allow the casual visitor to take in the highlights in a couple of hours (I defy anyone to spend less), but it would be easy to spend a month. Captain Jim Sharp is a knowledgable and congenial host with a wealth of personal experience in windjammers. Don't miss this hidden gem.

There is a lot of local history in this museum. The owner, Capt Jim Sharp, was there and answered many of our questions. He also signed the book I bought that he had written. You can do a self-guided your of the museum or use a DVD with Jim narrating and describing the artifacts in each room. We really enjoyed our visit here.

Thank you for your review, Glenda. Glad you enjoyed yourself. Did you also know that our virtual tour of the museum is available on line if you ever want to revisit the museum from the comfort of your home! Just go to our website: sailpowersteammuseum.org and click on the "virtual tour" option. Hope you thoroughly enjoy Jim's book (we think he's a pretty darned good story teller!) and come back to visit us again - our new building will be open to the public next year!

This is a "must visit" for people who are sailors or have an interest in the marine history of life in coastal Maine. The founder, Capt. Jim Sharp, has recorded a guided visit through this extensive collection. No matter your marine life interests, you will discover many things you never knew. Captain Sharp is an excellent storyteller and, if present, will be happy to answer your further questions.
There are many good maritime museums worth your visit in Maine, but none will be as interesting, informative, worthwhile, and enjoyable as this.
This is a newish and growing museum with many resources for local folks and enthusiasts, including a free "learning to sail" summer program for kids. It deserves your support as a visitor or volunteer.

Thank you so much for your review! Glad you had a nice time and hope you'll come back to see us again ... we're really looking forward to opening our new building to the public next season. And thank you, as well, for mentioning SKFF (Sail Kids For Free). We've had a wonderful year with over 100 kids sailing for FREE this summer. Already looking forward to expanding our reach next year to get kids out on the water, learning the art, science, and FUN of sail.

When I was looking on Trip Advisor for things to do on our visit to Rockport, I put the Sail Power & Steam Museum as a favorite because my husband is a Steam enthusiast and we both love sailing. Who knew I would end up with a serious crush on our host, Captain Jim Sharp?!! The museum is so well laid out and the video we were given (narrated by our gracious Captain Jim) was very informative as we strolled through the various rooms. Captain Jim set the Foucault Pendulum swinging for us, explaining the six minutes between every degree principle and setting up pins to reflect said principle, to be knocked down every six minutes. He also spent a huge amount of time with us in the Steam room, starting the air compressor and setting engines running as he explained their history and functions. My husband was like a kid in a candy store! I sat quietly and watched the video about the history of the fishing vessel, Adventure, which finishes with a younger Captain Jim (very handsome!!) speaking about his 25 (?) years with the ship sailing customers on tours of the Maine coast. The ship’s papers were given to Gloucester for Adventure to become her resident heritage sailing vessel. I almost cried as Captain Jim choked up a little on the video as ownership of the beautiful ship was handed over. Captain Jim Sharp is an absolute joy to listen to. He is humble, eloquent, and so generous with his unending knowledge of all things about sailing. We will be back and now have another bucket list event pencilled in; a sail on Adventure in Gloucester! The museum is great for everyone, but I would advise parents to keep a close eye on children who like to touch things because there are many fragile and unique items that would be an absolute shame to lose. (A personal favorite is the narwhal horn!)

What a gem of a museum! There's such a treasure trove of maritime history here. Captain Jim Sharp - whose collection makes up much of the museum's history - is a genuine mariner, story teller and windjammer historian. If you're lucky enough for him to give you a tour, you'll leave with a smile and all sorts of fabulous information about the sea, windjamming, adventure and maritime lore. This is a real find among Rockland's vibrant museum community!

Just finished a very informative audio/visual self guided tour of the Sail Power Steam Museum. A very worthwhile stop if you are in the area! The tour was narrated by Captain Jim himself. You can feel the passion he has for this museum and the lifetime of knowledge and stories to tell. Thank you for sharing your passion with us!

Visited this museum mid week & was delighted to be greeted by Captain Jim. I second all the comments about Captain Jim- warm, welcoming & super knowledgeable.

Previous reviewers comments were dead- on & even though our family has limited knowledge of boating, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The history of the schooner, the Bowdoin was particularly fascinating. Towards the back of the museum was Captain Jim’s video explanation about the amazing history of this still active schooner. The creativity of the crew to survive the Arctic terrain was nothing short of amazing with some luck thrown in.

Go back in time & visit this unique nautical museum for a few hours! ⚓️

Thanks for a great review, Kathleen P! We love the story of the Bowdoin, too. She's currently a sail training vessel with Maine Maritime Academy and is the flagship of the State of Maine. She's still sailing today, thanks to Capt. Jim's foresight and passion for wooden boats. And I loved that you called us a "Gem." Did you notice that that's the name of the schooner out in our front yard?

Outstanding! Anyone interested in history, machinery, sailing, navigation, exploration, lime industry, well… there is something for everyone.

Outstanding collection of artifacts some dating back hundreds of years, others remarkable for their place in history.

A big part of the experience, currently is to speak with the co-founder, curator, spinner of many of the interesting stories and captain of many of the vessels referenced in the museum, Jim Sharp!

Jim, his wife and probably many others have created a world class museum (in my humble opinion).

The video tour created to walk visitors through the museum enhances the experience even more.

For history buffs that enjoy the sea and sail, this museum seems like a worthy destination.

We were hear to visit Rockland, grab a sail and had a long list of places to go. This was a stand out.

This fascinating museum is a “must do” when visiting Rockland. The founder, Captain Jim Sharp is the real deal. He has done the sailing, boat repair, and navigation described in the museum. The video tour he narrates is an amazing oral history. The collection is vast, but well presented.
I was fascinated to learn how many limekilns there were in Rockland.

Personal Anecdotes by Capt. Jim Sharp, founder and raconteur, the 88 yr. old who greeted us at the door made our day at the Sail Power and Steam Museum.
The DVD and player provided our guided tour of the museum numerous rooms, which made the exhibits meaningful and come to life. The 3800 sq. ft addition, to be completed in a few months will enable the museum to display more of their boat collection with room to expand their free "learn to sail" curriculum for the children of Rockland.
The Museum has Music Jams on Sunday afternoons in summer, too.
The museum is located just off the Rockland Harbor Trail in a mostly residential neighborhood, so be sure to use your GPD or a local map.
Rockland is a favorite mid-coast vacation spot for us, a most authentic town with friendly people and lots of things to do.
