Stunning views of the Waterfront plastered with family shopping, seafood restaurants, and tugboats/ferries/sailboats/fishing boats. Its a mile and a half of fun in the sun with lots to do. Ps, the seafood is really good too.

Great historic area where so much trade is done like old school. Old alleyways and cobblestones. You can watch Lobster being unloaded in the wooden baskets. Nice views of smaller boats and tug boats. areas to eat or drink and take in the action.

Commercial Street is great any time of year, although it can get really crowded with tourists in the peak summer months. There's so much to see and do -- restaurants, cafes, bars, shops, historic architecture, tours, ferries, etc. We went to the annual St. Patrick's Day parade that runs along Commercial Street (see photos).

Prior posts indicated a free parking lot just behind the City Hall. We circled all over and never found it. Finally parked in a commercial lot and paid almost $50. While on the trolley tour, our guide pointed to a lot near the visitor center and said it was $15 for all day! Wish we had known that!
This rest of Portland was great. The trolley tour was really fun but hard to take pictures. We only saw 2 homeless people and they didn't bother anyone.

Nice buildings and views but I was shocked at how many homeless people I saw. I was in portland 5 years ago and I did not see this. What a sad situation. I hope the city of Portland addresses this sad situation before it impacts tourism. I know I don't plan to return. I was not at all comfortable with what I saw on the street while I walked with my kids.

Commercial street has many many restuarants, bars, stores and many wharfs. There is something for everyone. Has the Casco Bay ferries and whale watching and so much more.

Is this the street with the most shopping stores in Portland? Could you spend a full day shopping?

Loved Exchange Street for unique, selective stores. It's perpendicular to Fore Street which parallels and is above Commercial.

Where do the locals go for a good seafood dinner in Portland and when you have company from out of town, where is the one place yu would take them, asked the 60 year old couple coming through on a cruise.

Portland lobster company is a good outdoor place with music on weekend at nights. It can take a while to get your food though if it is busy. You order first and pay for food and then you tell the hostess so she can place you on a waiting list.

Possibly going the second week of October, what are some fun things to do? I’ve never been north of Boston, Mass!

Jen, I lived in the next town from Portland for over 20 years and I would be happy to offer some suggestions. let me know your age, are you traveling with family friends or alone, and some of your interests. Portland is a great city to live in or visit. The restaurant scene is second to none.

Any of the local places along the waterfront have great lobster. DiMillio's is our favorite.

Yes, everything will be open. Except for some beaches/resorts, Maine never closes!

Do you remember which store had those 9.99 shirts? Thanks!

I think it was called Blue Lobster. It is on commercial street right across the street from the tour ticket booth. It is on the corner. They had a pretty good selection as well as some $6.00 t-shirts. Good luck.
