- J. Douglas BerryGoode, Virginia385 contributionsA super way to see some of Portlands history. Very Enjoyable. We loved the train ride and the history that was shared with us. The staff and conductors were great in answering questions. Our seats were great. At times we couldn't hear due to inconsiderate visitors talking on cell phones instead of listening to the tour but the tour was great. We enjoyed the opportunity to get off the train at the swing bridge for photos. This was a very enjoyable tour. Good for all ages.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 September 2023
- angeleyes27Brigantine, New Jersey5,334 contributionsFun for all ages, right at cruise portThis little railroad is right in front of the cruise ship terminal. It is only a 40 minute ride along the coast. They stop for 10 minutes at the end and have open and closed sections. There is one hour free parking in front of the train.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 December 2023
- NHjoSaco, Maine13,332 contributionsOne of the country's most unique passenger trains. We were having coffee on the patio of a cafe across the street and watched people boarding the train for the short scenic trip along Casco Bay to Portland's East Promenade. We then went to the East Promenade and saw the train again. Some history from their website: Starting in the latter part of the 19th century, Maine had a unique system of railroads that ran on rails that were only 2 feet apart and traced back to the traditional width of horse-drawn roadways in England, where railroading was first developed.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 1 May 2024
- hoben57Houston, Texas100 contributionsA Cute, Narrow Guage TrainThis is a cute, narrow guage train that takes you for a short ride along the water. It was not crowded at this time in early May. The people were nice, friendly, and informative. They were also happy to pose for pics. Although it was cool out, I sat in the open air car so I could take pictures and the views were nice. There's a walking path next to the tracks where the people wave to the folks on the train making the experience fun. It's nice to support these trains to keep them available for future generations.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 May 2024
- cacnieOdenton, Maryland82 contributionsNice short rideThe ride is short and bumpy as well as slow. This was perfect for us because it was the first time our 6 year old had been on a train. We opted for “first class” to get the padded seats, due to the weather the day we were doing the ride. It really was delightful. My only gripe would be the volume of the narration, it seems loud to me. Otherwise I am glad we did it. Our child really enjoyed it.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 20 June 2024
- clostridium gretaniDenver, Colorado4 contributionsField Trip to Portland, MEIt was just a trip to check Maine off as a state I want to visit in my short time here in New England. I'm glad I visited. I had never ridden an old train, especially one that had a long history that wrestled sharing its time with progress (development of automobiles). And I thought that this part of Portland will be very crowded. I'm surprised it wasn't even though it was a tourist spot. Though the train ride was short (tour was 40 minutes long only), it cemented for me a little of what Maine is. I loved the salty smell of the air the moment I first arrived.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 12 August 2024

BEWARE - CLOSED in April. Despite their
answering machine stating they are running
winter hours as of now (specifically, hourly on the hour from 10-3 on Saturday and Sunday) and no information anywhere whatsoever including their website or Facebook to suggest otherwise, they are CLOSED. Spare yourself and your train-loving young children the disappointment of leaving another enjoyable activity in a rush to come ride the railway only to find a sign on the door when you arrive that they’re not running. They state it is for short staffing, which I get, but are you seriously that short staffed no one can take 30 seconds to update your hours appropriately?? You’re better giving no information at all than specifically providing incorrect information…

We happened upon the museum and being train fans were delighted when we discovered you could get tickets for a train ride. It was a great way to see the promenade on a scorcher of a July morning. The ride is slow but the views are wonderful. The first class train cars are comfortable and cool and full of history and there is an open air car (second class) that looked like fun as well. The conductor was incredibly knowledgeable and the staff at the museum were helpful and fun. The tickets are good for multiple rides if you want and there is a gift shop at the museum.

We were on a road trip with our pup and looking for pet friendly activities when we came across this place. Dogs are allowed to ride in their general seating area so we hopped in one of the open cars. It was very hard to hear the conductor in the open air cars but the views were nice and it was a good pet friendly, kid-friendly activity on a hot day. The train stops for about ten minutes and you can get out and walk around, during this time you can also chat with the conductor and staff, who are very friendly and can answer any questions if you couldn't hear the narration. Just one note, the train doesn't go very fast, or very far. We could have probably walked the distance in the same amount of time. However if you just like trains , have pets or kids with you, or have mobility issues this is a great way to see the area.

We had some time to spare so I decided to hop on this little and tour at the last minute. I’m so glad I did. The dedicated volunteers that support the efforts of salvaging and maintains of part of Portland history were lovely people. They were informed, friendly,
Knowledgeable and you could tell they cared About what they did.

My husband and I just happened by 20 minutes before the morning trip, and it was delightful, an entertaining view of part of Maine's transportation past. The conductor was a local who is enthusiastic about his work, and happy to share his expertise. A lovely outing we didn't expect!

The train was very creaky. It was difficult to hear the recording of facts about the area, although that felt like a dry reading of the Wikipedia page on Casco Bay. Instead of paying the $17/person fee, just walk along the coast. It takes the same route as the train, it’s free, and you’ll be able to hear your companions.

I had such a relaxing ride on this historic Narrow Gauge Railroad in Portland, Maine. The scenery along The Casco Bay and beaches was breathtaking ! The tour guide on the train was very knowledgeable and informative about the railroad’s history and the areas we traveled along the Eastern Promenade. I highly recommend this trip. Also the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum on the property was very interesting.

This is a quick trip that runs parallel to the coast on the old rail lines from years ago. The rail cars have been updated and look great. The narrator provided interesting historical background of the area and the railroad’s past history. This is Certainly worth a trip back to yesteryear to travel in the updated rail cars.

Is the Narrow gauge opened in January?
Written 13 July 2022
I’m not too sure. Their website doesn’t have listing for their hours for the whole year.
I would call the office to inquire about their hours in January.

In July would the outdoor train be too hot? Also if you have gone recently, and sat outdoors was the speaker working?

Hi, I was wondering if the ice cream served on the Friday night Ice Cream Train is nut-free or not? Thanks in advance.

Hi, This will be our first time in Portland. Would you recommend the train ride for couples without kids? I was hoping to do a wine/beer tasting on board, but those events aren't offered during our trip dates. I don't mean to offend anyone, but we do not want a hokey kid-centric experience. We'd like to see and learn about the bay, but in a more adult atmosphere. If the train isn't it, than that's fine, we'd rather know ahead of time. Thanks for your honesty, friends!

The narration we received was oriented towards adults who are interested in the history of Portland Harbor and the trains that once ran into it, along with the history of these narrow gauge trains. If you are interested in history, you should enjoy the ride.

I'd like to know what your operating schedule is for late May/Early June.
Thanks

The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad & Museum is closed for the winter. It normally opens in mid-May. The museum has not yet published its 2015 schedule yet but that should be published by mid-March. You can find the schedule at their website.
It's a nice place to visit and take a short ride (a little over a mile each way) on the train. If you are interested in railroads/trolleys, I really suggest also visiting the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunk (about 25 miles south of Portland). They have more than 100 trolleys and offer lots of rides on different trolleys every day.
