The architecture and Natural beauty of this town is breathtaking. If you want a respite and to have Natural surrounds that astonish and architecture that stuns, this is your town. It is not a place for thrill seekers but for aesthetes.

All white clapboard houses, a naval academy with training ship at dock, fresh lobster at end of Main Street. A very charming small town in Maine.

Castine has lovely antique homes and inns, peaceful elm tree-lined streets, beautiful gardens, a gorgeous harbor with pretty boats, a number of boutique-type shops. Good restaurants at three inns, a pub, and on the water. Tasty cafe food in a bakery, a book store and a variety store. Grocery store with great sandwiches. Gourmet items, gifts and hydroponic veggies at... More

Loved Castine's Main Street with its wide street and fine elms, which have survived Dutch Elm Disease. Recommend walking the entire length of it all the way to the harbor. That way you will appreciate the architecture: the elegant homes, a couple of charming inns, a beautiful church, as well as the few shops and galleries at the lower section... More

Ate lunch after a long drive and then went to the visitors center. Wish we would have gone there FIRST so we could have had a plan.... WE DID NOT so we came back for day two...This is a wonderful town and took pictures of everything and all the little signs so we would not forget....I knew nothing before I... More

Main Street has a lot of charm. There are beautiful old homes, some with lovely gardens. A few were made into B&B's. Walking up and down the street the shops are very limited. The best part for me was the view at the end of the street. The beautiful harbor!

There's lots of hype in the travel books about Castine and it's history, but one short visit us enough. The town, though cute, is quite small and VERY limited in things to do, and shops and restaurants are few.

Highly recommend stopping by the visitors center close to the wharf where you will park. A great map and information to get you acclimated with the village and its history. We walked many blocks exploring Main Street and the other areas with a wealth of historical homes and various buildings. A lovely place.

A nice collection of a handful of locally owned shops make for a nice experience. The historical society is wonderful also.

We went for a walking tour one afternoon with friends who have a home here. Castine has the feeling of a quiet charming village.
