Well worth the drive to Brunswick, Chamberlain's home is across the street from Bowdoin College and a short walk to the cemetery where he is buried. Amazing artifacts on display, our docent gave wonderful insight into Chamberlain's personal, military, and professional life.

Joshua L. Chamberlain was a Civil War Union Brigadier General, Governor and President of Bowdoin College. This museum provides an excellent perspective of Maine and the life of this very interesting and important man. He fought at Gettysburg and the house has artifacts from his life as a General. The house has been reconstructed with original artifacts as well as... More

The home of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain on the campus of Bowdoin College gives insight into the life of one of the great heroes of the Civil War. It was Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, a professor of rhetoric at Bowdoin College, who saved the day at Gettysburg by defending Little Round Top, which had it fallen, would have lost the battle for... Being Civil War buffs we stopped by the museum on Weds., Sept. 21st. Upon entry we encountered a staff person seated at the desk who was having a bad day or is like that all the time. She is described as having green hair, heavy set. She was most unfriendly, almost to the point of being hostile. She was annoyed... More

Joshua Chamberlain's family life revolved around this two-story early 19th Century jewel in the rough. The house passed through several hands after Chamberlains death but has been largely restored with original furniture and Chamberlain artifacts and family photos by the local historical society. The volunteer guide offered us a full hour of artfully delivered details about his family and his... More

The Joshua Chamberlain Museum honors the life of one of Maine's most distinguished citizens. We had an excellent docent. He was well-informed and enthusiastic and told the story of how Chamberlain made the transition from Bowdoin professor to self-taught Union general. Well worth a stop on your way up the Maine coast. Don't miss paying your respects at Chamberlain's grave... More

Nice step back in history. Ted was very knowledgeable and willing to answer many questions. Wonderful trip for a cloudy day. Like history came alive. Went on to see Chamberlain's burial site.

The house and artifacts here are all arranged in tribute to one man - J L Chamberlain - and if his life and history interest you then this is a perfect spot. More casual travelers may have a hard time getting engaged with the long explanations of the guides detailing Chamberlain's life and military career. A small shop with pertinent... More

Fabulous little museum! I wasn't really sure what to expect but my expectations were surpassed. Our tour guide was very informative and knowledgeable. You could tell he was very passionate about what he does. To see the changes the house has gone through was remarkable. Some rooms were a little sparse in decor, but the pieces that are there are...
