The walk through the not so dense forest was refreshing. The moist atmosphere and the fragrance of the jungles makes the air around you thick. Be mindful of leaches here. Easy to get scared. Good walk to the natural rock dam right across the river. Encounter you have a tree hut and a cave. Carry sufficient water to drink. Good place to get some nice clicks of nature around you.

Bhoothathankettu is a dam and tourist spot in Ernakulam district in Kerala, India. It is situated outside the village of Pindimana, about 10 km away from the town of Kothamangalam and 50 km away from the main city of Kochi.
You can look around via speed boat , or larger boat is available at reasonable price. The water is very deep at the river. The guide cum boat operator showed us various places that is used by elephants to cross the river. It is interesting and scary at the same time.
There is children's park near the Dam, You have plenty of Tea stall and eateries available. You can have a pleasant walk along the footpath over the dam.
Salim Ali bird sanctuary is another attraction nearby.

Bhoothathankettu is a dam in Ernakulam district , about 10 km away from the town of Kothamangalam and 50 km away from the main city of Kochi. There is a paved walk way parallel to the river. There is not much rush when I visited this place mainly due to Covid situation. Ample parking space is there. There is also a restaurant near the entrance. Speed boat facility is available. You can find many scenic spots along the way. A children's park is also there. There is a also a watch tower from where we can see a scenic view of the entire locality.
The dam is located nearby to the legendary Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary at Thattekkad.

I have visited Bhoothankettu several times and last month also from Kothamangalam I took this route to spent few hours since it was too hot and humid. After crossing the dam we can spend some time in the forest, only we should not go deep into the forest since during summer the elephants come out in large numbers to drink water from the reservoir. This time I couldn't see any elephants and also I didn't see many tourists; may be because the temperature outside was too high. I spent about three hours just enjoying the beauty of the forest and the unpolluted air together with the view of the tranquil water in the reservoir made the visit interesting.

Common picnic spot for locals. Good views and greenery. Could be crowded in peak hours. If lucky might spot some animals.

The dam is interesting as clearly a feat of engineering supplying water to the tea plantations. One can park and walk across to get a good view of the river.

Firstly about the name of this name. Bootham means 'ghost'. Kettu means 'build'. As legend has it, boothams had constructed a dam in this place and the present dam was built over it. This is a small picnic spot. Two striking things this about this dam (i) the massive structure over the head and (ii) the gush of water-flows right under your feet gives you a mesmerizing experience, especially during monsoon when the flow is very voluminous.
This located about one and a half hour drive from a place called Alwaye or about two hours from Ernakulam. Well connected by road; plenty of Government and private buses ply on this route. About 6 KMs uphill is the Edamalayar dam and power station. It is worth driving up through the winding roads of the forest. Take food with you. Sun glass, caps and umbrella will be additional help aids. There is a small park nearby; but more is desired in a picnic spot like this.

It is not a question. Bhothathankettu is not a Dam but is a Barrage. Its shutters can be open fully.

Boating through periyar is perhaps the best way to explore the wilderness of BHOOTHATHANKETTU and THATTEKKAD in the real sense. Different types of boats from passenger’s capacity of 8 to 80 are available.
Friends , is there any wildlife mmm..!?

vehicles should be parked and have to walk a long distance to the bird sanctuary. only forest. I didn't see any birds there and really wasted my time with kids. Some season only u can see few birds. A butterfly garden also there. But no butterflies at all. All r not well maintained also. Not a good picnic spot if u expect something from the name . Full forest with cool atmosphere. For elderly person it may find difficult to walk to walk around.
