Whenever I happen to be in Ernakulam, I visit this great temple without fail.
It is centrally located in Ernakulam.
The main entrance is on Darbar Hall Road.
The temple premises is huge.
The main deity here is Lord Siva (also known as Ernakulathappan) and is very powerful.
You will forget all your worries & desires once you are in front of Lord Siva.
At the sight of the main deity, one will definitely feel the positive vibes and inner satisfaction & peace. It is a powerful deity.
The temple is full of traditions and maintained neatly.
I could spend some peaceful worry-free moments in front of Lord Siva.
There are temples for Hanuman & Ragavendra just in front of the Siva temple.
In my opinion it is a must visit temple for inner peace, fulfilment, and satisfaction.

It is said that the name Ernakulam was derived from "rishi-naga-kulam". Here is an excerpt from the temple site "A boy named Devalan, victim of a curse and now a Nagarshi wanders about seeking a means to redeem himself from the curse. He comes across the Siva Linga made by Arjuna and takes it with him. After taking holy dips in the sacred rivers and praying at temples he arrives at "Rishinakulam" - the ancient name of present Ernakulam. Finding that the place is suitable for Shiva Prasada, the Nagarshi places the Shiva Lingam on the ground and offers poojas. However, the locals harass him and he decides to leave with the Shiva Linga. On attempting to lift the Shiva Linga he finds that it has become fixed to the ground and cannot be moved. It is this Shiva Linga we see as Kirathamoorthy on the northern side of the temple."
A beautiful temple that one should not miss on a visit to Kochi or Ernakulam.

It is, in fact, a temple complex with lots of altars dedicated to different Shivaite deities such as Ganesh/Ganapati, Hanuman etc. It is a beautiful blend of Tamilian and Keralite architecture, mystical and charming. Do visit when in Ernakulam!

The Temple is Very Good and located in the Heart of the City . The Temple is around 1Km from Ernakulam Junction Railway Station. Main Deity is God Shiva. The Temple is maintained in a clean manner . But only Suggestion for Temple authorities is to have display boards in English which will help the tourists .

This temple is considered one of the foremost Shiva temples in Kerala .It is located in the heart of Ernakulam ( Kochi ). Built in 1840, the temple complex covers an area of slightly more than one acre . Kochi is easily accessible by road , rail and air and has an international airport.
The temple is closely associated with the Hindu epic ' Mahabaratha '. According to legend , Lord Shiva and Arjuna the famed archer amongst the Pandava brothers joined battle over the issue of a wild boar which was killed by arrows shot by both .Lord Shiva had disguised himself as a tribal hunter ( Kiartha ) and was not recognised by Arjuna. After being severely wounded Arjuna loses to Lord Shiva who fights in the guise of a tribal hunter . wondering as to how he could have been bested in battle by a mere mortal , Arjuna makes a Shiva Linga out of mud and offers prayers and flowers to Lord Shiva , not knowing that he had battled Lord Shiva only . To Arjuna's astonishment , the flower offered to lord Shiva falls on the head of the Kiartha ( tribal hunter ).Arjuna realises that he has been defeated by none other than Lord Shiva himself and bows to him in awe .Pleased with his dedication and sincerity Lord Shiva blesses Arjuna and grants him the famed PASHUPATHA arrow at the very spot. This is where the temple stands now.
The legend continues. Arjuna leaves , the place becomes densely forested and the Shiv Ling forgotten . Till such time, many centuries later , a man with the body of a snake is found in the area offering prayers to the same Shiv Ling . Undeterred by the locals who try to drive him away , the mysterious half man continues his penance . The sage is restored to human form after Lord Shiva and his consort appear and ask him to bathe in the pond nearby. The city Ernakulam derives its name from this pond .Ernakulam is said to be the corrupted name of ' Eere Naal Kulam ' meaning the pond which always has water . This famous pond is located just outside the temple precincts .
The main sanctum sanctorum houses the Lingam which is ' swayambhoo ' ( divinely formed ). The Shiv Ling created by Arjuna is housed in a small shrine on the northern side of the main lingam. Shrines for Lord Ganesha, Ayyappa ,Nagaraj and Godess Parvathi also are there .
The entire architecture is in Kerala style . ( pic posted ) Adjacent to the Shiva temple There is a temple for Lord Muruga which is in Tamil style with rituals performed in Tamil style . There is also a beautiful Hanuman temple with a huge 200 year old banyan tree growing alongside. Both are worth visiting.
The temple is open from early morning but closes at 11am sharp . It opens again only at 4pm . Recommended to find out temple timings before visitng to avoid disappointment.
The main festival is the' Uthsavom ' , one of the grandest in Kochi, is attended in large numbers by devotees and tourist alike. It happens in Dec- Jan every year .
A small and lovely temple worth visiting . Being aware of the history and legend makes it that much more interesting.

Ernakulam Shiva temple. In the heart of the city. Old and traditional. Your offering is inthe form of "VEDI" which is nothing but a loud cracker which you can order before entering the temple. The charges can be pre paid. The LORD will hear the cracker sound when you pray and your prayers will be answered, thus goes the belief.

My wife and I visited the Ernakulatthappan temple in February 2015 after many years.
The temple is maintained very well and the priests performing the pujas as they have been for many years.
It reminded me of my college days in Maharaja's college about 59 years ago. The temple is adjacent to adjacent to the college.
I used to visit the temple very often during the evening Deeparadhana and pray to sree Ernakulatthappan
The early morning walk from our hotel was very nice and had an excellent darshan of the deities in the temple
