- NATALIE T6 contributionsBeautiful colorsWe specifically came to Maine in October to see the foliage changing. This short and sweet train ride filled that requirement. Passed some beautiful fields and a serene lake. Yes the train is old and creaky. But it is an old train car. The open air car was in for repairs so the 360 view wasn't avaialble. The very heavy windows do open, so you can get some amazing photos without windoe glare. For $20 it was worth it.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 October 2023
- John K1 contributionGreat volunteer staffEnjoyed train tour. Staff very friendly & helpful. Long line for single restroom; train was held until all could use. Scenery was varied with marshes, woodland & ponds. Train provided water/sodas for passengers.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 October 2023
- Stephanie B6 contributionsLovely Experience! We spent a lovely afternoon on the train out of the Unity, Maine station to see the changing fall colors. Lots of fun to watch families with children enjoying the ride and an easy, peaceful way to spend some time together. The crew were professional and friendly and we would recommend this 'adventure'!Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 19 October 2023
- Deb F1 contributionWas okKids were ok with it. I thought being Halloween ride would be decorated some and maybe some games. Grandson and friend thought ok but expected little more. People were great. One young man full of history about trains and they loved his stories. Thank you so much.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 31 October 2023
- Jan A1 contributionThe santa ExpressThank you for an unforgettable Santa Express ride. Santa and Mrs Claus took their time seeing and meeting all of the children. The cocoa and cookies were a nice touch. Looking forward to next year.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 26 November 2023
- sandy g1 contributionThe Best Day EVER!What a wonderful experience! We took our son and 4-year-old grandson on the Santa Express and had a great time! When our grandson saw Mr. & Mrs. Santa, he got soooooo excited! We sang Christmas songs, had some Christmas cookies and hot chocolate, and talked with Mr. & Mrs. Claus. Our grandson said it was the best day EVER!Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 26 November 2023
- Angela C13 contributionsTake time to enjoy!A group of 18 of us enjoyed this train ride. The car we were in was built in 1914. They used coal stoves for heat and it was toasty warm. It was light out when we left at 4 so we were able to enjoy some beautiful scenery along the lake. Santa and Mrs. Claus were wonderful with the children and adults. We sang Christmas carols and enjoyed fresh sugar cookies and hot chocolate. The train crew were knowledgeable and happily answered our questions about the train. They were informative, letting us know when to pay attention to what was happening with the motion of the train and when we could freely move about. A great family experience!Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 December 2023
- Abbigail J2 contributionstouristyGood family fun. You get a 1/2 hour train ride with another 1/2 hour return along the same track. Gift shop was poorly stocked, but had some trrasures if one really wanted a momento. The train was cold as they did not light the wood burning stove and the staff primarily sat off to themselves chatting with each other. It would also be helpfyl if they had benches or someplace to sit while waiting for staff to get up off their seats in the train to let us board. Nice adventure, but doubtful if we will return.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 April 2024

My son and I enjoyed the 2/22/2020 train ride with pizza and whoopie pie lunch! The staff was friendly and helpful, and attentive to the needs of passengers. My son is a young adult with autism, and is obsessed with trains, so the combination of the train ride with the delicious food was a hit with him! Dress in layers, as the stove kept the car very warm (which was nice, especially since there were babies in attendance), and plan to arrive at the Depot 30-40 minutes before departure, as parking is limited.
The price ($25/adult) was very reasonable for a 1.5 hour train ride, 2+ slices of fresh pizza, and a dessert. It's challenging to find activities that we can do together, and we'll definitely be repeat customers!

The four of us went on the rail cycles. We were very disappointed. First of all the safety vests we had to wear smelled like BO really bad and need washed. Then when we got ready to get on the rail cycles, we were not able to get the seat adjusted for our grandson to be able to help pedal without his feet hitting the front of his seat. Both rail cycles we were on derailed (fell off the tracks), the one car 3 times, the other car 5 times. We actually turned our cycles around before we got to the end because of these problems. We appreciate the volunteers who run this activity, but there needs to be some maintenance and repairs to make for a better experience. We did not feel like we got our money's worth at $23 per person.

This is the perfect activity for children on a summer day. The railroad itself and the equipment were in good condition and the staff, without exception, were extremely friendly and welcoming. The only downside was that the announcements and possibly description of what we saw were completely inaudible, and so we learned nothing of the history of this region. Better speakers are needed on the open air car. But, one of the best parts came at the end, with a delicious cone from the ice cream stand located on the station platform. Definitely worth doing again.

We highly recommend the Rail Cycles! Being in our early 60's & 70's, it was a little more of a workout than expected, but not too extreme. An hour round trip was just enough for us first timers, but an hour and a half to a two hour run would be fun for someone who is a little fitter. It's a nice ride with a scenic lake and surrounded by woodlands. We enjoyed seeing an eagle perched on a treetop and a young deer cross the tracks. Our guide was friendly & knowledgeable, and gave us a nice talk on the history of the railroad and the area during our half way point.

The concept of the Santa Train is good, but that being said, this was what was lacking. No one loves Christmas and Santa more than my Grandson. He was so excited to see Santa. Santa did not appear to seem too excited to see the children. He came into our car halfway through the ride. Was not jolly. There were no “Ho Ho Ho’s”!! He sat down on a regular chair in the front. There was no invitation for the kids to go see Santa so after awhile we took the kids down. No sitting on the lap. He did not ask them what they wanted for Christmas. He made one quick trip up and down the isle to give the kids a very small stuffed animal. Very limited interaction with the children when he did this. He clearly was not enjoying his job and one of the worst Santa’s I have seen!
It was advertised that there would be Christmas songs. There were none. When Santa is spending time in one car it would have been much more festive and entertaining for the kids to have Mrs Claus in the other car interacting and having either a story or songs. Santa got off of the train first so he could say goodbye to everyone. He stood over by the building instead of near the steps of the train. You would have to walk over to him to say goodbye as I saw no effort from him.
Would not do again unless it becomes more festive and Santa is jolly!!

Pretty area. Guide really needs to give a tour. There wasnt any commentary on the peddle trip. When we stopped there was a brief list of the number of birds on the lake and that was about it. 45 min ride with not much to go with it. We wouldnt go back

Scenery was amazing and the weather was perfect. The views of the lake are well worth the ticket price alone. They have 3 cars. The closest car to the engine was open-air seating. That's where Rose and myself sat.

This was ok. If you are really interested in trying the railcycle out, then I would say do it. If you are interested in seeing anything interesting while trying the railcycle out, then I would say, don't do it. The trip was only :25 one way. Then we picked up the railcycles, turned them around, and pedaled back the same way for :25. So less than an hour total. I expected to have to go back the way we came, but the problem is there is nothing really to look at in those :25. On the way out, we did see some geese in a pond and an eagle nest. At the half way point, I asked if we could pause for a few minutes at each of those two spots to get a closer look. The guide said we could but he did nothing more than slow down slightly for 30 seconds at each spot. The two somewhat interesting things were simply bypassed. Unfortunate. This really was not a "tour". It was a chance to try a railcycle.
