This is a STUNNING dam, which is worth the long drive from just about anywhere.
It is possible to walk on the damn itself (and dare to look down...).
The view from the dam itself is stunning and one has to appreciate the architecture of the dam.
The place was deserted during our visit, but during the high season, it is possible to abseil from the bridge down.
The climb up the stairs to the parking lot is exhausting.
Don't miss this one!

Located 2.5 hours from Hobart into the Wild West, the place almost feels like the end of the road. The road to the Gordon Dam goes through some interesting vistas during winter.

Free entry to visit, the small car park located next to a toilet block was only 2 min walk to the Dam wall access point. Open 24 hours, there are several vantage lookouts before access to the dam wall via some stairs. Those with fear of heights, hold on to your hats and enjoy the view from the lookouts but those that are brave can go down the stairs and walk along the dam wall from one side of the valley wall to another. Great view and to me it was worth the drive just to see it. The nearest fuel station was at Lake Pedder Wilderness lodge however, they might not be open 24hr.

Went to see the dam whilst staying at the nearby Pedder Wilderness Lodge so just a short drive away for us, but if you are driving in from elsewhere on a day trip it's a smooth, scenic drive in on sealed winding road.
** Do check road conditions in winter months as there can be closures due to snow/ice etc **

On arrival there is a large open area on your left so just pull up and park, there is also a toilet block in this area.

Access down to the dam wall is by a metal staircase, it's not too steep but do wear sensible shoes and be prepared for a leg pumping workout on the way back up.
The wall is awesome I felt quite giddy just looking at it from the top of the stairs and it's equally spectacular when walking the dam wall whether looking down over the edge or out across the water.

A very quiet day when we visited so had the place to ourselves, I'm sure it's a bit busier in warmer weather especially when the abseiling down the wall tours are running !!.
Got to see how the workers get from the top to the base of the dam wall as there was someone on site during our visit, they travel in a little box car on rails to get up and down, but I reckon stairs may be quicker but not several times a day.

Overall well worth a look it is a stunning feat of engineering, it's not in a location that you may just quickly detour to, to visit you need to make it part of your travel plan and it's well worth it.

A spectacular engineering structure set in beautiful country.

The drive out to Strathgordon is fairly long but the scenery along the way is grand. I know the lakes out here are man-made and there may be good arguments against such storages but with the back drop of the various mountain ranges, it is truly spectacular country.

Gordon Dam itself it quite a sight. An amazing bit of water infrastructure engineering. You can view it from the lower dam access road or an alternate overlook up above.

For the daring, a range of extreme style activities are on offer: I would suggest booking ahead for these as the dam we visited not a sole was seen and the activity office closed up.

Words can't describe this masterpiece 👌 Built in the 1970s with a concrete wall 198m long and 140mhigh. Easy access from the car park at the amenities block .. The view is breath taking , the construction amazing. You can walk down the 200 steps, a bit scary, and walk along the perfectly curved top. The drive to the dam is about an hour from Mt Field National Park, so fuel up at Westerway. The roads are excellent with stunning views along the way.

Located at the end of Gordon Rd is an amazing work of engineering. You can get good views of the dam from platform just down from the carpark, and at the end of the road, but it is worth descending the stairs if you are able to walk along the top of the dam. Descending the stairs is the worst part if you are a bit timid with heights, but there is ample railing and the only time you feel any movement is in the second last flight before the bottom. Once on the dam wall you'll feel pretty secure (it's about 3 metres wide at the top and around 17 at the base, 140 metres below!). Great views of Lake Gordon from all around. Be ready for any weather conditions of course in this area. We were fortunate to have a brilliant summer's day.

WE stayed at the accommodation for a couple of nights and on one occasion were lucky enough to speak to some contactors there to do some safety checks, it was very interesting to talk to them. As we had plenty of time we visited the 4 dams that help keep the Gordon at its constant level. Rock colours and formations in these areas are well worth spending the extra time to have a good look around

We took the long drive into the 'wild west' to check it out...beautiful stark landscapes & wild country along the way & it's worth the drive to check out the amazing drop from the dam wall. The steps down are a bit scary & full on to climb back up...but I'm glad I did it...the view was amazing!

A decent trek to get here but SO worth it. This feat of engineering is a sight to behold. If you have the time, you must make it a must-see on your Tasmanian travels. Stay a night at Pedders Wildnerness Lodge so there's no rush.
