Beautiful Garden
Apr 2021 • Family
We were on a family trip to Nola and couldn't leave without visiting a plantation. The garden was lovely and perfect for a selfie, but the plantation tour was too short (1 hour) and there were no historical facts about slaves.
On the property, there are paintings of black people and a slave house, but the slaves were not acknowledged. The story focuses on the property's owners and who purchased and inherited the land. This was disappointing because slavery is a part of American history. In my opinion, the past should be discussed for those seeking personal healing or more education.
The garden is a great place to visit. Extremely peaceful, but there's more to the story that's being kept hidden.
Matthew, our tour guide, was fantastic. He does have a lot of knowledge, and I did ask him a lot of clarifying questions.

A great tour, but torrential rain made us miss the grounds
Apr 2021
The plantation is beautiful and we really enjoyed the tour. The interior of the plantation is gorgeous. We had to bail on the tour of the grounds because of torrential rain but will visit again when we are in the area.

Just ok
Apr 2021
The guide did a good job but it was obvious that the tour focuses on the current owner. You get some info about the history but the building and grounds have been through a lot of changes over the years. So it is how this owner interprets the way things probably looked. He definitely has an eclectic style when it comes to gardens. I don’t know why he added a Japanese garden. It really seems out of place. We felt the price was high for a one hour tour.

Wonderful Tour/Lunch
We spent an afternoon at Houmas House and it’s was lovely.
Our tour guide, Sandra, was very knowledgeable and quite funny. She kept my teenage son engaged and laughing which is no easy task :)
The grounds are beautiful. B/w the tour and our lunch reservation at Carriage House, we walked the gardens and took pictures. There was a lot of property to cover and many spots to just sit and enjoy the scenery.
Our lunch at the Carriage House was fantastic. The dining room is gorgeous and the food was delicious.
Overall, a great experience from start to finish.

Poor customer service
Apr 2021
The grounds are nice; we never saw the house. We pre-booked a tour. When we arrived, we were told the tour would be later than expected. After waiting an additional half hour after that time, we left without seeing the house. They could have contacted us to let us know of the time change, but didn't.

Tour/grounds/brunch
Great way to spend a day. My partner and I are staying at the Oak Alley Plantation for 5 days (which is Wonderful) but wanted to explore the other nearby plantation especially since they offered an Easter brunch.
We walked the beautiful grounds and then took the tour with Patrick. He was a great guide (and I've been a guide in multiple jobs); he knew his talking points, kept conversation active, had his jokes up his sleeve and kept us moving but at an appropriate pace. Mild mannered, polite and very informative. Answered all questions spot on. It would of been nice to get more history in regards to the slavery side of things (all the tours seem to focus on the owners and I feel like there is a lopsidedness to the history being taught to tourists) but that's not his fault and I'm sure due to the sensitivity of the subject.
Brunch (food) was good (not amazing for the cost) but you are paying for the atmosphere, which you 100% get. Brunch under the oaks, women in festive hats, and just a classic southern feel. Definitely a highlight of our trip this far.
I'm happy to be staying in the quiet, rural feeling Oak Alley but for a bit more stimulation and a more Louisiana touristy feel this place did the trick.
Every staff member was very friendly (even though all of them, which we found funny, "sighed" when asked how there day was going (busy) but after some conversation it turned a bit more friendly and fun.
Grounds again, and picture perfect so be ready to take some fun pictures.

Nice side trip from our New Orleans vacation
Mar 2021
My wife and I really enjoyed our visit to Houmas House. The tour of the house was lead by a very knowledgeable docent and the stories she shared added much to the tour. Had a lovely lunch and cocktail at the restaurant - a building that although it was only 7 years old was built to reflect the architecture of the times.

Sorry, but I am absolutely shocked by the renovation of this home.
Sadly, not in a good way.
Wondering if anyone else feels the same?
I am sure it is lovely, but such a departure from what I saw when I visited many years ago.
Nothing authentic about any of it. IMO a true nightmare.

I am truly sorry that you were shocked by the renovation, as compared to your visit many years ago. The fact is that the current presentation is very close in design and colors as to the original Houmas House. The exterior colors are exact, and the interior colors were taken from the original colors of the Hampton homes in South Carolina that are dated the same as Houmas House. The previous owners of Houmas House painted everything white, which is not the original color. The colors in style in the 1820's were brilliant jewel colors. Houmas House was furnished with very grand pieces, similar to today. In fact we have more original pieces in the Mansion today, that have been present in over 100 years. The current presentation is very accurate in style, color, and furnishings. Almost every piece of artwork is from Louisiana and of the period from 1820 to 1860. We worked very had to make Houmas House, as accurate as possible. Please judge us by what is present, and not by what existed 20 years ago. The renovations made in 1940 were simply not accurate.
