Description:

The International Bluegrass Music Museum is the world's only facility...

The International Bluegrass Music Museum is the world's only facility dedicated to the history and preservation of the international history of bluegrass music.

Plan a trip to Western Kentucky. Bring your instruments! Attend our jam sessions, concerts, and the ROMP Bluegrass Roots & Branches Festival. Then walk the hills of Jerusalem Ridge, and visit the homeplace of Bill Monroe, just down the road.

Exhibits:

-Bluegrass Hall of Fame - Pioneers of the music and people who have contributed to its greatness.

-Stage-screen presentations of the museum's new digital VOHP documentary series highlighting First Generation musicians.

-The Classic Band - The story of how Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, Lester Flatt, Chubby Wise, and Howard Watts changed the world.

-Historically significant bluegrass instruments.

-The Timeline of Bluegrass Music - Following the roots from the Scots-Irish string bands to camp meetings and gospel quartets, through fiddling conventions, the jazz era, and the folk music revival.

-The work of legendary bluegrass photographers such as Les Leverett, Ron Petronko, Stephanie P. Ledgin, Phil Zimmerman, Gene Lowinger, Marta Moret, and Carl Fleishhauer.

I made a trip to Owensboro last week just to see the museum and it was well worth it. The facility is nice and the displays are interesting and well arranged. I learned a lot about the history of bluegrass music and the pioneers in the genre. The staff was friendly and helpful. There was a concert that night and... More

Within easy walking distance to downtown Owensboro and right on the river. If you love music but don't know a lot about bluegrass you'll find the humble beginnings of this classic American art form fascinating. Lots of read and snippets of music to listen to. There was also a banjo playing class taking place while we were there so it's... More

This is a great visit for anyone especially music lovers. We were on a bus tour, but I could have spent more time at this museum. I like most music and I think this made me appreciate Blue Grass Music even more. I would definitely go back again if in the area.

The museum is downtown but we did not have trouble finding a parking spot. We were greeted by a very nice young man who told us about the video and to go upstairs for more exhibits. There is an elevator to the second floor. The video is about the beginning and history of bluegrass. The old footage pulls you in... More

This museum is a treasure trove of information and artifacts from the history of bluegrass music. We enjoyed the documentary so much that we bought our own copy. It's a great value at only $5 for admission. Be sure to also visit Bill Monroe's homeplace in Rosine Ky. if you get the chance. It's not easy to find, but really... More

This museum presents Bluegrass music in a fun way. Lots of places to listen to the great songs. It is great because you get to listen to entire songs, not just a few lines. Enjoyed the film about the history. It is a hands on museum in most places. They encourage you to touch the musical instruments.

We learned a lot about the history of Bluegrass during this impromptu visit as we were passing through Owensboro! The documentary that continuously plays in the small theater is available for sale in the gift shop, which was helpful since we didn't have time to watch it in its entirety plus see the museum before it closed at 5 p.m.... Well worth the $5 entry fee. Nicely laid out. Nice mix of information and music. Main focus on inception and early history of bluegrass. Would like to see more of bluegrass artists from 1980's to present. Definitely worth the stop if you are a fan of bluegrass or music in general. The explanation of the birth of bluegrass really underscored... More

Learn about the history of Bluegrass from Bill Monroe and Flatt and Scruggs and on. Some days there is a live free performance, which we were lucky enough to hear the day we visited. A great selection of rare and hard to find bluegrass CDs. Check out the unique wood counters. My favorite part of the museum, (besides hearing a... More
