I visited Ernie Miller Nature Park the second time for hiking knowing that the Visitor Center would closed during the Lockdown. I hiked the about- a-mile plus long South Trail and had a good work out. Be aware that most of the trail is dirt and rocky, so it could be slippery under wet conditions. The trail crosses a little creek a couple of times, but the crossings were easy to get across. The Prairie grass field is a special attraction.
I have toured the Visitor Center before and it is worth a visit.

The nature center is well maintained and informative. The various trails are lovely and easy to navigate. There are stone steps and roots on most of the trails through the woods but also very easy walking trails available.

Wonderful nature center with a wide variety of animals to see; turtles, snakes, birds. They also offer educational classes and demonstrations. The trails were spectacular. Varied from dirt to paved. Wonderful break from the rush of the city. My kids were able to play in the creek and climb through the woods, all within miles of downtown.

Ok walking trail, but dogs are not allowed. Since when we walk we always take our dog we won't be back.

This is a very nice nature center to visit, especially with little ones. No admission to enter, but certain special programs cost a couple dollars per person. There is plenty to see inside and a lot geared towards the children. They offer bird watching from their garden, to books and easy activities as well as other small animals to observe. The walking trails are beautiful and some are easy to maneuver with little children & stroller. There are bathroom facilities and places where you can picnic. It is a nice way to spend the afternoon just admiring nature.

I bring the kids here often. They enjoy exploring the trails and playing with the hands-on exhibits in the nature center. It's always hard to pull them away when it's time to go home.

I used to take my sons on this trail when they were grade school age. Fast forward 17 years, and we took an impromptu walk again through Ernie Miller Nature Park. They have added a building with staff, educational materials, a viewing area to watch small wildlife outside, education rooms, a courtyard, and cages to house injured birds. That morning, we were able to view an adult Owl, and watched the squirrels quarrel with the birds around the small man-made pond. The trail was exactly as we remembered it. We had a bonus that morning watching a group of deer walk on the trail in front of us. There is a small creek toward the back, that you cross over by jumping from boulder, to boulder. This is also a fun place to skip rocks, or just look for small fish. When my sons were young, this was the highlight of the path. There is also an additional pathway to walk, but we were pushed for time that morning, so we did not venture on it. What a wonderful park, within the city limits, to see a small dose of wildlife, and to just build memories.

We live close by and come here often. The Nature Center has a variety of different animals including owls, hawks, snakes, rabbits and turtles. My son even had a birthday party here. The staff was great. They allowed us to bring food to the venue and they entertained the kids with a show featuring some of the animals. Signage for the walking trails are clear and it is always enjoyable to take walks. Bring a camera because you can take some amazing pictures here!

They have many nature trails ranging from a minor stroll to a fairly intense hike. It also has a small exhibit of small animals native to Kansas. And also very educational history of Kansas, along with some Olathe history.

I love the beauty and tranquility of walking the trails and visiting the nature center. Been visiting since my daughter was little. She loved it so much she volunteered there and then worked there.

No, the trails are open dawn to dusk. The park gets locked up each night.

The nature center and the trails are free. Some programs have a cost.

Great Question! I know that the park was the first for Olathe. I had to really dig to locate some information. To follow is what I found on Olathe's 150 Most Notable People..."Ernest "Ernie” Miller wrote a newspaper column, “Dresser Drawer,” that became a community favorite. But he was more than a columnist. Miller was the editor of the Olathe Mirror from 1939 to 1952. His position as a community journalist influenced public opinion, but also chronicled the community, its people and history. His love of Olathe was obvious through his writing and community participation. The Chamber of Commerce named him the first Mr. Olathe in 1964."
