It certainly is an impressive sight, worth the detour. I visited it on our way from Santiago Apoala (a magical place in the mountains of Oaxaca) to the Biosphere Reserve of Tehuacán-Cuicatlán. Closeby there is a restaurant for lunch. Museum and church are closed between 2-4 pm.

Yanuitlan used to be on a major trade route, later to be bypassed by the railroad and then the highway. So there was a reason this giant church was built in what looks like the middle of nowhere. Take a few hours here to soak it all in. Take a walking tour around the church, go inside and see the beautiful alter and paintings and then go see the small museum (the last for a small fee).
It's a amazing to think that this was built about 20 years after the Conquest.

Keeping this site open to tourists feels like an afterthought rather than something that could benefit everyone. While I understand the balance, it would have been nice to read more about the site's history. Maybe they don't want to attract too much attention, but if they do, adding some English translations (as well as other languages) would be nice.
