We arrived at the Monastery mid Sunday afternoon during a Buddhist service and stood with the local people to listen to Monks playing and chanting. The monastery is beautiful with amazing wood carvings and colourfully painted buddha’s. This was our entrance to the Phobjikha valley.

This is probably the most beautifully decorated monastery in Bhutan. At list of the ones I saw. We got there just in time to see the festival which was an unexpected benefit. The road to the Phobjikha Valley and Gangtey is not of the best condition but the views are great.

I just sat there below the ancient confir trees, listened to the crows, looked at the multiple humble villages down the valley filled with gratitude for all the blessing in my life.

Our guide was related to the Abbot. It was interesting to be able to observe first-hand the running of such monasteries, especially one that has special celebrations that are of national importance.

It may be a lengthy drive from Thimpu although all on sealed roads but this place is magical. It is like a hidden valley with the Monastery as the obvious feature. There is scenery in abundance and plenty of walking available.

Monastery is currently under renovation but you can visit the temples inside. Beautiful architecture. One of the temple inside contained piles of old scriptures.

We visited the Gangtey Monastery on the day if the Black Crane Festival, which is celebrated to create awareness of this lovely bird which is now an endangered species. The local men, women and children perform dances, play games to entertain themselves, the tourists and the royalty whenever they visit. The music is melodious and the dance gentle and pleasing. It gets crowded inside...they should plan for more visitors in future.

This was a special stop on a photography trip through Bhutan. The monks had a special ceremony and tea for us. We were allowed to photograph during the ceremony
