A wooden church in Lipnica Murowana forms a part of UNESCO site called "Wooden Churches of Southern Little Poland" - that consist of 6 churches (from east to west): Haczów, Blizne, Sękowa, Binarowa, Lipnica Murowana, Dębno Podhalańskie. In December 2012 we managed to see 3 of them. They all are superb monuments! Joint forces of local parishes and county's tourist boards made some of them reachable for tourists not only for external views but also for internal decorating delight.
Lipnica Murowana, St Leonard's church: there is a guide woman waiting for tourists in usual hours during the season (Eastern to October), for the rest of the year (or out of normal hours) there's a phone number on a little board to call a guide back to the church (it takes her about an hour to get there, so it might be a better idea to check first at http://www.parlipnicam.tarnow.opoka.org.pl/news.php - Polish only - for the phone number). There's a small charge for entry to the church. Visit inside is highly recommended for all the wall paintings, seeing only the church's exterior would be a huge mistake.

This Unesco World Heritage church was erected in 1141 on the site of a pagan temple and has survived largely unaltered, accounting for its simpler form. The story has it that in 1997 flood waters threatened the church and villagers tied it with ropes to a huge nearby oak and it survived. The large eaves, called Sabots, sheltered parishioners who traveled for services, arrived on Saturday and stayed Saturday night (hence the name Sabot) in the shelter of the eaves. The oldest of the magnificent interior polychrome decorations dates from the 15th century.

While travelling to Krakow we were fortunate to make a stop in the small village of LIPNICA Murowana. We took a 15 minute walk from the town center to the site of Saint Leonard's Church. It is almost a mystical setting in a small forest-like setting at the end of the road. The Church is from the 1500's and has been beautifully maintained with exquisitely painted brightly colored art work. The magnificent wooden structure alone is worth the trip.
Unfortunately we only had time to see this Church (one of six wooden churches listed on the UNESCO World Heritage site).
