I have lived in Des Moines for over 20 years and this was my first visit. I did not make it through the entire center but it does have good art. The current exhibition is sketches and drawings. There are plaques on the wall to identify the artist and year as well as guards who can provide information. I plan... More

We have visited galleries in various cities in the U.S., Canada, South America, and Europe. The Des Moines Art Center is not large, but I was surprised to see work by Warhol, Courbet, Hopper, Moore, and Picasso in a relatively small museum in America's Heartland. They had a print exhibition including prints by Miro and Calder. Worth a visit! As... More

Saw a picture of the Richard Meier museum building and decided to take a look. Discovered the building also has parts by Eliel Saarinen and I.M. Pei. Amazing how they have all be so successfully combined. The collection is remarkable, too, with terrific Hopper, Sargent, Courbet, Bellows and Tanner, to name but a few. Wonderfully helpful and enthusiastic docents. And... More

The Museum has a trio of buildings, each by a famous architect (Saarinen, Pei, and Maier), and somehow they all work together to provide wonderful spaces to display the artwork. The permanent collection focuses on US and some European art of the last 125 years, and includes some lovely pieces although it is far from comprehensive. The Alchemy temporary exhibit... More

Great permanent collection, wonderful displays. Wide variety of modern styles and artists. The archeture wings are "displays" of modern art all on their own! You can't beat the price either! The surrounding park lands and outdoor displays are wonderful as well. You can't go wrong here.

We went to the art center on a Friday afternoon about an hour before closing. It was very relaxing and peaceful. They have a nice blend of modern and older art as well as large pieces. The building is really cool as well. They had a couple of Grant Woods and an Edward Hopper. I like the architectural pieces as... More

Real gem worth visiting. Excellent shows very well curated, and the Art Center's own collection of art pieces is surprisingly interesting and intriguing.

People rave about this Art Center and for good reason. The contemporary art collection will amaze you. Three distinct buildings by three different architects showcase special exhibits and the regular collection. Excellent place for lunch.
