We walked along the Des Moines river taking in the views of the rivers dams from the viewing areas on the way then when the Des Moines river splits into two you follow the other river called the Racoon river back up the same direction for about a two mile up a proper walkway and cycle track. This leading to Grey's Lake park. Which was a quite park and picnic area wher there was a car park and portaloo toilets.

I started the trail by the embassy suites downtown and walked to the area by the Lutheran hospital. The trail is nicely paved and connects into a much larger trail system, giving the opportunity to hike or bike as far as you would wish. Bikers were courteous, giving signals when approaching from behind. On the hike I passed several interesting areas including the botanical gardens, Asian garden, and the Women of Achievement pedestrian bridge over the river. Warning- I didn’t notice any restrooms on the section I hiked.

The river trail connects Gray's Lake to downtown Des Moines. It is fairly flat with a few tiny uphill parts, and it has a fair amount of shade. There are a few drinking fountains along the way. At Gray's Lake there's restrooms and parking lots. It goes right by Mullet's restaurant so you can duck in for a quick pint.

Spent a sunny day walking the trail with my S.O. Lots of other people were walking or riding bikes on the trail. Some of the bike folks were polite, but many acted as if they did not like sharing the trail with non-bike folks

Wide paved paths, many bridges to cross back and forth if you wish. The trail passes the Robert D Ray Asian garden and can take you to the Des Moines Botanical Garden. Easy access to Court Avenue and the endless supply of restaurants and taverns there. A great place to people watch or sit and watch the river and the many birds. Lots of benches to take a break from strolling. Many interesting buildings and close to the whole heart of downtown.

Even though it was bitter cold, I checked out the walk. A nice stroll indeed with a raging river to my left. Worth it but better in warmer weather lol.

This area has a few different points of interest.
You have a nice view of the capitol from here.
You can see the Women of Achievement Bridge, and the cute park that looks like a fishing pole with a red and white bobber.
While there, a homeless or transient man was walking, sitting, and lying in the area. Just be cautious and aware of your surroundings, as you would anywhere.

A city isn't a real one unless it has a harbour or a river is running through. The Des Moines River is dividing the city between down town and East Village. I've done my morning runs along the river up and down on both sides. Well, I've seen more pleasant river sides, but it's absolutely worth the walk. In some places there's some construction work going in so i just had to switch to the other side. In the upper end there's the Rotary Riverside Park for kids that is just being extended with a skateboarding park and on the opposite side there's the tiny Asian park with the small pagoda. I liked the pedestrian bridge. However I think the city should further development the Riverside.
