The title above says it all. I took my parents, sister, and my family down to visit the capitol building during the week. I have been here before, but that day was an exceptionally good day to go because you got to see the employees there in action and it was quite the active day there. I usually have gone... More

I have visited many state capitols, and Iowa's State Capitol stands above them All. The painstaking restoration and attention to restoring the original details are nonpareil. The spaces are so well designed, and follow the model of our National Capitol. The detail and ornament, I think, even exceeds that of the Nations Capitol. I lost count of how many variations... Friend and local dropped us off here saying that the Iowa state capital is a must see. We visited Greece, Italy, Austria, Germany, Amsterdam and finally Iceland last year following throngs through palaces so we didn't expect much. Instead we were impressed by the rich colors and opulent style of the state house. Premier Xi Jing Ping of China visited... More

I came here to see the beauty of the building and views that surrounded it were breath taking. I would suggest anyone coming to town to stop here and see the architect of the building and the views surrounding it.

Possibly biased as I worked as an unpaid intern in the 1970's, revisited for the first time this summer and found it to be a wonderful piece of Iowa history. Staff throughout very informative, welcoming and friendly. Well worth an hour of anyone's time in Des Moines. Parking nearby and has excellent disabled access.

Ir is a magnificent building. The thing that struck me most forcefully, though, was the expanse of gardens and grounds, the steps and terracing leading down toward the river but also the lawns to either side and parks to the south. There were joggers, walkers, sitters, readers. It really seemed like the people's place--and isn't that what a capitol ought to... More

We were on our way across the state and looking for something to do on the way. Glad we stopped. They offer a tour, but beware, it lasts at least an hour and half. Being from Massachusetts originally, we were not interested in the history the tour had to offer, especially my 8 & 10 year old. We ended up... More

Walked in at 12:50 for the 1PM. Enjoyed the history and commentary. Recently moved back to Iowa, and had not been to the Capitol bldg.

Went on a Saturday so the building was closed. However we still went and took pictures of the outside. It's a beautiful building and I wished we had the opportunity to see the inside....maybe next time. There are parking right outside for visitors so that was convenient.
