Des Moines and the Capitol Building are very beautiful. The Golden Dome is amazing, and it can be seen from far away. At we came late, we had to do a self-guided tour. The Capitol Building is even more impressive inside than outside. There are...More

That golden dome really stands out. Whether you’re at an Iowa Cubs game, on the Interstate or in the ‘burbs, the State Capitol’s gilded lid is instantly recognizable. In the morning and late-afternoon sun, it shimmers. The interior shimmers, too. Located on a hill overlooking...More

A total view of the city, a wonderful dome, adorable statue of Lincoln with his son "Tad", murals, and it opens at 6 AM! What is not to like?

Karen, the tour guide, really loved her work and it showed. We were able to see the key features of the building like the grand staircase, the dome, paintings, mosaics, legistative chambers and law library plus more than I can write about. It has been...More

You can take a guided or self guide tour. We took the guided and it was very interesting with quite a bit of walking and steps. Not too much for us seniors though. Lawrence was our guide and pretty good but his long stories were...More

The Iowa state Capitol is well worth seeing. Set on a hill overlooking Des Moines, it has a gold leaf dome that can be seen for miles. The interior boasts wall mosaics in classic Greek and 28th century traditions. The senate and House Chambers are...More

I live here so I am biased, but each time I step into the Capitol I am in awe of the craftsmanship that went into building the structure. I regularly visit state capitols because they are an excellent way to learn about a state's history...More

I was in Des Moines for a business trip and decided to stop in to the Capitol building afterwards. I had originally planned on taking a self-guided tour. However, on Saturdays you cannot get into any of the rooms on a self-guided tour. Plus the...More

Enjoyed a very through and informative tour of the building on a Saturday morning. Parking was easy going, as it was Saturday so nothing going on in the building. Saw the senate and house chambers, old Supreme Court room, upper walkway beneath the dome, and...More
