Many years ago I spent many hours attending legislative events observing the House & Senate at work. Stopped today as I had a photograph and document for the Governor. First I had been inside for a long time. Entered the West door and found security surveillance with two pleasant persons who instructed me thru and to the door for the... More

I recommend you take the free tour with a guide if this is your first time. You'll get more history and access to areas that you could not see on your own. We have a beautiful Capitol. The grounds are monument displays are extensive. If you are visiting on a warm sunny day you may want to pack a picnic and... More

Many interesting facts and beautiful hand painted rooms fill an hour walk thru the building. We did not take the guided tour but those in offices shared their knowledge. The mosaics are a don't miss!

Walking around the Capitol Building is a step into the history of Iowa. Around every corner is a display, monument or plaque teaching the history of this great state. And the architecture and structure of the building make it easy to explain the system of government. And it's FREE!

This tour was free and took about 2 hours. The painted detail on the walls was amazing, but the staircase in the library and going to the balcony on the inside of the dome were my favorite parts! This was one of the highlights of my trip to Des Moines, aside from the city's food and beer!

Free tours are great and substantial in time and quality/detail. This was very informative and thorough as you visit most parts of the building. The library was particularly memorable. Must see in Des Moines

When i was still in the workforce I was in about every room of this building and some of them were in pretty poor shape. A few years ago they did a complete remodel of the capitol and in my opinion did a commendable job. Taking the tour is probably the best way to see and hear about it in... More
