Wear a hat if you're out in the heat of summer as it's about 1/2 mile each way. The landowner has kindly kept a path to the memorial so be respectful during your time on his property. Lots of people leave something behind, which can...More

I couldn't resist stopping since we were nearby. Almost felt like I was visiting a cemetery at night. If you're a fan or are familiar with the events, then it may be worth it; if you aren't, then you won't be impressed.

Even if you liked Buddy Holly, it's just a field with some flowers and stuff marking the site. I wasn't impressed. Better to listen to his music than some macabre fascination with where he died.

Always wanted to visit the site of the air accident singer Don McLean memorialized in his song; "American Pie." The crash site is in a farmer's field a few miles north of Clear Lake, Iowa, and about a quarter mile hike from Gull Avenue. The...More

A bit of a dirt road walk in a cornfield so wear walking shoes. Play some tunes from buddy holly, Richie valance. The songs are classics and legends were lost.

We are a little older and slower since the last visit but wouldn't miss visiting. We are old enough to remember the sad event and it was truly 'the day the music died'.

If you have visited the Surf Ballroom, are fan of Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper or Ritchie Valens, or are simply a fan of rock-n-roll music, going to the crash site of 3 rock-n-roll pioneers is very worth your time. The crash site is north...More

Tried to visit the crash site 3 years ago in May but snow kept us out. Am glad we went back and got it done. The Surf Ballroom was more than we ever expected. You can just stand there and imagine Buddy Holly, the Big...More

If you visited the Surf Ballroom you have to include this on your list to see. There's something kind of eerie where you can actually visit an area where people met their demise. I followed the directions which I had got at the Surf and...More

When you are in Clear Lake or Mason City, be sure to visit this hallowed place. You will be at the place the day the music died. So reverent!

You should also visit the Surf Ballroom - the site of their last show. It's close to the crash site.

The Clear Lake boat area has spots for parking and staying, by the way and it's not far from the downtown area. You might have checked that already but just in case--yes, there is a place if you want to stay. Maybe you might... More
