There are storeys of stories about David Livingstone, the famous Scottish explorer and missionary, in this birthplace museum of his life and work. Housed in Shuttle Row, a tenement which the Livingstones shared with 23 other families, this historic attraction is packed with items relating to his explorations in Africa. These range from letters and navigation equipment to his gruesome medical kit and hippo and lion skulls! It also gives a fascinating insight into the living and working conditions of 19th-century Scotland. We have children's quizzes and regular events to help keep little ones entertained, along with a sandy playpark and 20 acres of parkland and woodland. Located on the banks of the River Clyde, we are the starting point for some beautiful walks. Our tearoom is run by Motherwell College, providing lunches every weekday from 11am-2pm. Unfortunately the tearoom is not open on weekends.

When we saw that this Centre was closing for refurbishment we decided to visit before it closed. My husband had visited as a child but I had not been before. It was wonderful to trace David Livingstone's life through the years and the impact he had on the slavery trade in South Africa. The way he mapped out some of... More

I came to this centre with my parents when I was young and now I'm taking my own children. Just managed to visit before it closes for renovation and loved seeing so much about David Livingstone's amazing life before the chance will be gone for a while. The original artefacts, books, and the detail of his life and travels are... More

This is the place David Livingston was born and grew up in. Tons of artifacts and exhibits to see of his early life and adventures to Africa. English National Trust members can get in free. Car parking is free too. Worth a visit if you are in the area. An amazing guy, who did so much in his life.

Once again I visited the home of David Livingstone. Been doing this since I was a child and still get a great feeling that Blantyre and Livingstone are part of a great era in history. Happy memories and I shall hopefully return.

I expected that they were going to be closed for major works but that has been postponed. The museum is interesting and tells the story of Livingstone. I had been before and thoroughly enjoyed the indoor exhibits on a rainy day. This time, I wanted to visit the gardens on a dry day. The nature trail is amazing. It is... More

The David Livinstone Centre provides a fascinating history of a most remarkable man. Set in grounds along side the Clyde, also has a Victorian School, which our children loved. The "teacher" gave a very good if scary account of what it must have been like to go to school in Livinstone's time. The grounds around the centre are beautiful and... More

This attraction not only gives the story of David Livingstone the explorer but good insight of what life was like when he was a boy. Guides are very informative and there is also a lovely tea room.

If you have an adventurous heart then learning about fellow explorer David Livingstone may take your fancy. I really enjoyed the layout of the centre. It was fun to follow in the footsteps of a daring and courageous spirit. If you have time then you can take a stroll along the river to Bothwell Castle which takes roughly 30 minutes... More
