Revisited this nature preserve after many years and it was as spectacular as I recalled. There is a brochure that will guide you along the trail and explain the unusual geological and botanical features. The trail registry box was broken, so get one from the...More

I really enjoyed this park. Loved listening to the sound of the running water. We went after a rainfall, so some of the trails were pretty rugged. We had on mudboots, which were perfect for these trails. I recommend wearing them if it has rained...More

The trailhead is located at the east end of Shades State Park. The trail crosses a road and enters the nature reserve. Several rock bluffs makes it photogenic. Not crowded at all when I was there.

I love this state park. It doesn't have swimming pools, restaurants or snack bars. It simply has nature. Lots of beautiful, wood picnic areas, a small lake for fishing, fantastic walking trails (be sure to take the one down to Sugar Creek) but my favorite...More

My first time here was on my 3rd date with my husband so we go back occasionally. It's a very safe place yet pretty secluded so you don't have to worry about a large crowd of people. The devil's backbone is our favorite which is...More

We decided to stop here after hearing about it from some family but we had no idea what we were in for. The trail to the Devil's Backbone was a good workout but you need to be very careful on the natural bridge and I...More

Stopped here to camp on a cross country road trip. It is very remotely located; a curious wooded area in the middle of expanses of cornfields. Definitely very pretty, and the campgrounds are indeed in the "shades." Unfortunately, we got there at 6 on a...More

Despite the fact that shades has a primitive campground, it is a nice park to visit. The riverbed and sandstone make for an interesting hiking trail as it winds around sugar creek. Not a canoeing area in the park, but close to Turkey Run state...More

There's no beach. Short hike to the river (probably 1/4 mile ) where people swim.
