My Dutch friend and I visited here one afternoon while I was staying with them. We were the only ones there and it was totally quiet. The enormity of the cemetery is jaw dropping with nearly 32,000 German graves. You can debate their participation in...More

One of the mightiest places I’ve ever seen. Was completly alone at this overwhelming, calm place. It’s a must see if you are close by.

This German war cemetery is simply enormous. Acres upon acres of neatly kept graves disappearing off into the distance. Beautifully kept by the German war graves commission and tremendously moving. That many of the graves commemorate soldiers in their early teens makes it even more...More

The route from the carpark to the Cemetery is very anonymous - not much going on, and no sign of what awaits. But when you reach the edge of the Cemetery it strikes you. The 31585 crosses lined up in the large field had quite...More

There are no big signs showing that you have just arrived at the most sad place in all of Holland. When you park outside, you cannot see the cemetery. You then walk a small path, surrounded by trees, and then all of a sudden, you...More

Just walk in an be in awe of this quiet and somber place. Almost 32,000 German soldiers are buried here. Stunningly quiet and very well kept.

I visited many (famous) Allied and German war cemeteries. Remarkably, although the only German cemetery in the Netherlands and the biggest one in the world, Ysselsteyn is hardly known (certainly not by the Dutch). That isn't justified. Everyone should visit it for many reasons. The...More

I've seen some small German war cemetaries around Kleve, and the WWI cemetary at Langemark. In contrast to those, this cemetary has crosses, which look better than the simple plates in the ground. There are just under 32.000 graves, mostly from 1944-1945, but I also...More

This was my first visit to Ysselsteyn seeing my grandfather's grave for the first time. The sight of the more than 31 thousand crosses are a great reminder of the horrors that occurred more than 70 years ago. History might be better understood by the...More

Over 31,500 graves at this place, mostly of German soldiers, killed in action in The Netherlands during WWII. A very quiet place, offering time and space for contemplation and to think about the sheer madness of war in general.
