This former benedictine abbey was founded during the 8th century. It used to be a bishop see from 1317 to 1789, after which, it was abandoned until it was listed as Historical Monument during the 1840s.Discover the 14th century cloister with its sculpted capitals, the former cathedral with all its decorations, and also the Master of Cabestany's sculptures (12th century).Following which, you can visit the former fortified village which has kept its medieval character.

There appears to be two references to this Abbey so I will write in both. The top of his head is missing!!! Why would this not appeal to small boys? There are icons and pictures everywhere. The entrance fee - if you have a Cathar...More

A charming abbey in a very nice setting. A nice peaceful surrounding and a surprising discovery in the area coming from les Cammazes.

Lovely cloisters and not much else. Can look round in twenty minutes. Best bit is the peace and quiet. Nice bar down the road though.

The environs of Saint Papoul are very pretty in rolling countryside and the little village itself very pleasant. The Abbey seems to be closed a great deal and is not to my mind anything exceptional to warrant making an out of the way stop over....More

Not far from Castelnaudry in a pretty village. Some unusual carved capitals which are reproduced in the small exhibition so you can see the details properly. Visit on your way to Saissic castle.

... not much else to see. You can do the visit in about 20mn. The church and the cloister are the only 2 things to see. I don't regret visiting it but i won't be recommending the detour either.

This is a nice abbey to visit if you are passing by or reasonably near. Not much to it but interesting nonetheless. Items in the shop are a little expensive for what they are. Roadworks in the town make it a little hard to find...More
