I was blown away by the quality of the LaPorte County Historical Society Museum. I expected a small town, little museum in an old house. I was completely wrong. The museum is housed in a purpose built building, on the acreage of an old farm. The building itself incorporates actual architectural artifacts saved from historic buildings that were torn down. The museum was started by the Kesling family as an auto museum and it still MANY perfectly restored cars from the earliest era through the 60's. Many are extremely rare - a Tucker, Dusenburg "J"; several Auburns (including a t-top model carefully reconstructed from ALL original parts, when it was impossible to buy the entire car due to its rarity). The 2nd floor also includes cases full of old transportation related toys; sleds, etc. The main floor includes more toys and dolls; cases of interesting household items; glassware and multiple "period rooms" furnished in the actual items from the pioneer and victorian eras as well as the 1920's and 1960's. Included are living rooms; bedrooms; dentist and doctor's offices and a school room. On the lower level is an amazing gun collection (I know nothing about guns, but I am sure if you are interested in that topic, you would be impressed); archeological items found in Indiana; a HUGE bar from am old tavern and a very interesting video about the family and the collection. There are also several old planes hanging from the ceilings and a prototype electric car, designed and built by the patriarch of the family. I cannot say enough things about this museum - it has something for everybody!! Cost to get in for out of county people is only $6!!!!

This museum surprised me. It's crammed full of autos and other history of the area and its presentation is nothing like the standard rather boring historical museums I've seen. The displays are more "living" than dead and the auto collection is surprisingly interesting, from "ancient" classic cars to an innovative futuristic car the museum founder had been developing. This is a rather lively place and I suspect even small children would be intrigued by the way the displays don't talk down to one, and yet don't simplify things so much as to be dumbed down. It took me years to get here and I'm sorry I waiting so long.

Easy to find and in a lovely building, this was a step back into history. They had an engaging exhibit on Bridal Gowns through the decades and an entire floor dedicated to vehicles, including a Tucker that was featured in the Movie. Rooms throughout the decades so you can see what life was like. Very enjoyable.

I went with my son instead of a school trip he wasn't interested in. He loved the military collection way downstairs, and I loved the Belle Gunness stuff (local serial killer woman from the last century!) I would have loved the "big" miniature church, also in the basement, but it was no longer operational, so even if you pushed the button, you couldn't get the people to walk down the aisle, as intended. I was also disappointed that La Lumiere High School wasn't included in the case with all the local high schools, as it is also in La Porte. Felt incomplete, and even though I tried to contact someone about that, no-one ever got back to me. Upper floor is cool cars, and we took pictures with those. Bottom floor has all kinds of items (if you're a fan of antique stores) that you will love. Fans, dolls, cookware, etc. from the 1800s. Kinda cool. We spent hours there, and ended up buying stuff at the "gift store", which was just off the main entrance. No staff to speak of to ask questions of, though, so it's self-guided.

This was a surprisingly large and well maintained museum. The collections are outstanding. The vehicle collection alone is worth the drive since Laporte is a bit out of the way. They actually have a 48 Tucker which was something I wasn't sure I'd ever see.
We were very pleased and will frequent again when in the area

We never imagined seeing so much in a local museum! Many old cars from a private collection plus toys, dolls, guns and more. It was a nostalgia trip to my childhood. Three floors of memorabilia. We were there nearly two hours.

My husband, daughter, granddaughter and myself went to the presentation this spring of the KOP. The presentation was very informative and very well presented. After the presentation we toured the museum. There was something of interest for each of our age groups. In addition all of the volunteers were very helpful and very nice. I have recommended to our family and friends.

Stopped in while we were in town early for an appointment and had two hours to kill. Wow! Three floors of amazing artifacts. We needed way more time than two hours. My son especially enjoyed the hundreds of guns and the cars in the basement and on the second floor. Will go again soon and plan on spending the day.

Great for families, couples, friends, or even solo. This museum has A LOT for him, a BUNCH for her, and really has something for everyone. One of the largest and most interesting gun collections I've ever heard of, cars, industry, artifacts, toys, models, bikes, tools, and way way way more. A little bit of everything. Many photos and unique items from days past. A room full of information all about the serial killer Belle Gunness. What a treasure! Small gift shop has neat books, paper dolls, among other items. Staff is wonderful and helpful.

My brother took us to this museum when we visited, and he stated the items there constantly change.
I learned a lot about the history of this small town and how it's people and innovations have affected the world in a big way.
