About
Clegg Garden resides on the hillside overlooking state scenic waterway Wildcat Creek. The slopes feature a rare gravel hill prairie ecosystem. From creek side to hilltop elevation changes 100 feet, making for excellent hiking opportunity along the mile of trail. The looping trail meanders through oak woodland, gravel hill prairie, riparian corridor and savanna. Different seasons afford varying highlights. Spring woodland blooms dapple the understory, summer prairie and savanna wildflowers show off vibrant colors, fall leaf change presents a panoply of color in the forest canopy. Year round visitors see the striking landscape views from the many overlooks.

We walked to all 9 of the trail markers. It was just under two miles in distance. There was some significant elevation gain. At least significant for Indiana. Our hiking ap said we had over 600 feet of elevation change. Our hike was 1.92 miles. It was a nice piece of property to hike. It has deep ravines. High overlooks of the Wildcat Creek. You can even walk down a rugged gorge to the creek below. We wished we would have had our hiking boots for that section, Our running shoes were a little too flimsy.

We had noticed this area for some time. We finally made an evening walk out of it. It can all be hiked in one visit. WE thouroghly enjoyed our time here. If looking for a wooded group of trails in Lafayette. This is the best the area has to offer.

Having visited a number of botanic gardens in the past including the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, although I wasn't naive enough to believe it was on the same scale, I was expecting a little more. From the description, botanic always alludes to a multitude of plant varieties, sculpted gardens and maybe hot houses, glass houses or the addition of a water feature. In fact the Jerry E Clegg Botanic Gardens was really no more than a simple nature walk with a few lookout points, more akin to a country park. It wasn't large and you would be stretched to spend more than a couple of hours there. What was evident, was the continued struggle with erosion that the site has. Many a footpath was covered in rubble which was falling from adjacent slopes. There was also a walk which just trickled off into nothing but a dead end.

There were a few placards hither and yon which told you plant names, which I assume is where they believe that the site can be called botanic garden, but it was less garden and more raw country. However a nice couple of hours killed in a pleasant environment, just don't expect too much.

Clegg Gardens is a small park located on a hill overlooking the Wildcat Creek. Parking is in a gravel lot across the road. The park has several trails and a small garden area. The trails travel through a ravine and up hills, with extension along the banks of the Wildcat. All trails can easily be walked in under 2 hours. This a nice, relaxing place to spend a few hours in the woods.

Clegg Botanical Gardens is a quiet, restful park on the banks of the Wildcat Creek. Nestled in a ravine in the Wildcat Valley, the garden features a wide array of plant life, all labeled. There is a nice lookout point over the Wildcat. If you need to get away from it all, this is the place. Parking is located across the road.

You must visit at different times of the year to get the full effect. You can take your students here to learn more about different plants. Or you can take a nice stroll to relax your spirit. We take pictures here also.

We love Clegg Botanic Garden! When we went (in the Spring) there were a ton of gorgeous daffodils everywhere. As we walked on the trail we came upon a hillside covered in blooming Virginia Bluebells. The pathway runs down across the hill and then along side Wildcat Creek. There are awesome lookout points at the ridge of the hill too. This is a really neat place to visit! Note: There no restrooms here at all and it isn't handicap accessible.

I had never been there before. My friend in Indy never even knew about it, but we really enjoyed the nature.

We stopped here on a sunny, hot weekday afternoon. Parking is across the highway from the actual garden, so be careful as vehicles sometimes go zipping by pretty fast. The trails consist of a loop (Wildcat Creek Trail) with an extension to the south (Peter's Mill Bridge Trail) - the total length is over a mile. There is a map at the trailhead by the buildings but no handout maps (we printed an online one, but it was woefully inadequate), so be prepared to get lost as there are some side trails that head off in various directions. However, if you follow the highway noise, you'll eventually get back to where you started.

The trails are rough in spots, but there is evidence of improvements being made so things are getting better. Even though you will see some houses, it is still pretty nice and secluded with plenty of wildlife. We came across a doe and her fawn and watched each other for several minutes before they got back to their own walk through the woods.

I have loved this place for decades. However, the trails are in a sad state. Many are missing one or both of the rails. This makes it difficult for some people to walk the trails.

This place is a hidden gem. Many people do not even know that it is in Lafayette. I used to take our dog out there to let him run around. The place is beautiful and SO restful.
