This has to be one of the coolest military air museums around! SO MUCH information to see and learn. The docents know their stuff, so check with them for questions! A few static planes outside. It's handicap accessible and you'll need about an hour to explore! Go there now! Thank me later!

The volunteers are very passionate about the museum. They are very proud of the museum. Very clean. A lot of history in a small building. Do recommend visiting the museum. Gave a four because it is small.

Atterbury AAF, later Bakalar AFB, has an interesting history. During World War II, it trained troop glider, transport, and medium bomber crews, including the first African-American bomber crews (analogous to the Tuskegee Airman who were trained down south to fly fighters). Following a short hiatus after the end of the war, the base was used by the Air Force Reserve flying transport aircraft. One reserve squadron from here was chosen to have their cargo planes converted to aerial gunships during the Vietnam War (although the unit was transferred from Bakalar before they got their modified aircraft). As the Vietnam War wound down, the base was closed and converted to a civilian airport.
The little museum sitting next to the airport terminal tells the story of base from inception through deactivation in good detail. It also touches on notable local and state aviation personages (WASP pilots, astronauts, etc.). You can learn quite a bit about local aviation history in just half-an-hour or so, and it's free!

I went to the museum with my senior group. A volunteered spoke before we walked around the museum & then saw the multiple old film strips. The museum is small but nicely done. I learned so much for the film strips especially about gliders, the different planes & the people who flew them. Very interesting.

This place is a jewel - lots of volunteers that want to share their knowledge, they have a used book section full of amazing books on wars, history, and aviation. Please don't miss eating at The Hangar! The fries were so good I had to give them to my kids so I didn't keep eating them. The Pork Tenderloin sandwich and Cheeseburger were so good, my cousin that lives in town said that the breakfasts are always excellent. DON"T MISS THE FILMS at the end - we really enjoyed and it didn't take very long.

This museum contains historic preservation objects from the airfield next door, which was established in WWII as a glider training facility of the Army Air Corps. Just a convenient walk from the Hangar Restaurant.

The volunteers of the Atterbury-Bakalar Air Museum have done a great job with their museum to the legacy of all the units and operations of Bakalar airfield (Columbus IN airport) The restorations and exhibits are very well done and brightly lit. There is a CG-2 WWII cargo glider cockpit that is excellent. Mostly dioramas and artifacts - including a working tower beacon! No fee, but a nice donation would be appropriate. Right next to the Airport Restaurant - so if you have a wait for a table this is an excellent diversion.
