Driving towards Chicago we stopped by Columbus and were drawn towards this large memorial in the center of the city. The soaring limestone pillars and engravings of actual letters from soldiers To their loved ones at home made this a very moving memorial.

This memorial is poignant and uplifting - a mixture of emotions. Each column has names of fallen veterans and the text from letters home. Letters veterans wrote to people at home. I'm a baby boomer, teenager from the 60s. the letter that made me cry most was from PFC Randall Harris, U.S. Marines killed in Vietnam, Jan 2 1968. Letter written Dec 1967: "To Whom it may concern. I want my funeral expenses taken out first. Then I want Grandpa Haas paid $1000 for the loan which I owe him for. If I have any other known debts, pay them." - letters were dated from early 1900s through last year. worth a stop to honor our veterans. the design of the memorial is impactful.

This veteran's memorial spanning multiple wars is a sobering reminder of the cost of freedom. Worth visiting to take a moment to read some of the many names, give a prayer of thanks, and be reminded of your blessings.

Must see all of these. You need to walk around after driving the city to then walk all over the city again, then drive it again

From a distance, it looks like just limestone pillars... step closer and you'll see what makes this memorial so special. There are names of the fallen etched into the walls, like most memorials - however, this one goes one step further. They have taken letters from the soldiers and sailors and had them etched into the walls. Just reading these letters filled me with such emotion and brought tears to my eyes. These were not just names on a wall... these were people. I recommend this to everyone. We have been there a few times.

We didn't have this on our list of sight seeing, but it is an absolute must! Each column is inscribed with quotes from letters written to loved ones while at war.

I have seen several veterans memorial and I am always grateful for the service of the individuals who have died in battle. The one in Columbus is especially moving as they show the last letters that the survivors received from their loved ones who were subsequently lost in battle. Very touching...

In addition to being architecturally interesting with its 40 foot spires the letters to and from soldiers whose names are also engraved is very moving. Probably the most personal feeling war memorial I've visited. Very well done.
