Rarely have I been so disappointed in an attraction as here. To start with, you need to be in good shape to do the small round (about 20 tombs). The path to it is difficult to pass by and so is the 124-step staircase. What's worse is that the signage is poor. We were able to find graves 1 to 6, albeit with difficulty. For 7 to 14 we had to follow the path. No idea, but path. A post with a number would be a big help. A little explanation would have been nice too. Unfortunately. There was also a photo exhibition at the ticket sale. The accompanying text was in Italian. It was not indicated exactly which tomb in the photo was. After 10 holes in the wall or the tombs, we returned to the car in frustration. Once but never again. Money and time wasted.

the necropoli di montessu was our most interessting culture activity during our week in the province of carbonia iglesias. the spectacular cave graves are well signposted, the entry costs 7.50 euro per person. after a hike over some hundreds of stairs we arrived on a plateau which presents a beautiful view over the the landscape. in the steep mountains and rocks we found graves with geometric openings...mostly squares or circles... with big chambers in the mountains, but also open graves in which there are pre historic sign or figures carved into the rock. the big group of graves, created in the bronze age, are realy spectacular and a must for everyone who is interessted in culture and pre historic archeology.
very good and free information material is available in different languages at the entry of this unbelieveble historical attraction, but there are no guides, who accompany the guests during the trip.
the area is very wide and there are a lot of graves to explore, the pathes are not always comfortable and it is better to wear good shoes. on hot and sunny days is is neccessary to use a cap or a hat, also sun protection. also enough water should be in the backpack, because there is no shop to buy something.
we spended a lot of time at the necropoli di montessu...much more as we calculated,,,but this place is so interessting, that we forgot the time. it was a archeological highlight we never forget.

We were fascinated by our visit here, after having learned something about the paleolithic people of Sardinia. It is impressive that with no metal tools they carved out these burial caves, decorated some of them--and used this site for about 1000 years. There are about 40 individual tombs, but the logical loop includes about half of those (ones further up the mountain are pretty deteriorated). After paying your entrance fee, study and map and ask directions. You can drive part way up to the site and park. Then it is about 100 steps up to the tombs themselves (with good signage)--an area of about 10 tombs. Wear good shoes. There is a path to another set of about 10 tombs--then you can take a path (the old road) back to the parking area. It is amazing that you can crawl into and enter these chambers.

We went to the necropolis full of expectations and enthusiasm but came back disappointed and frustrated. The explanations are inadequate. Just a few general and repetitive signs here and there that talked more about the structure (which you could obviously already see) that anything meaningful or explanatory. Especially the first leaflet that they give you at the reception is written in an incomprehensible academic manner. It is impressive to see but I can't say I learned anything delicious I this experience. P.S. You have to climb a sunny hill to get there. Take water and a hat with you!

A necropolis which is located at the top of the mountain with a rounded layout. Well looked after, trained staff. I recommend trekking clothing
