About
Just two hours from Kigali, Akagera National Park is situated in the eastern province of Rwanda, on the border with Tanzania. The park covers an area of approximately 1,100 km² encompassing a unique and picturesque park, with rich diversity in wildlife and environments. The mountainous western boundary reaches altitudes of nearly 2000 metres in the Mutumba hills region, these highlands provide spectacular views over the expanse of lakes and papyrus swamps to the east, the largest protected wetland in Central Africa. On a national scale the Akagera region is an important area for large mammals in the country as the only protected savannah environment in Rwanda, complimenting the humid forests of Nyungwe National Park in the south of Rwanda and the afro-alpine habitats of Volcanoes National Park in the north. Akagera has an inspiring conservation story, under the public private partnership between conservation non-profit African Parks and the Rwanda Development Board.

    Excellent safari and guide
We had a safari tour through the park with our guide Justus. Thanks to him we were able to spot 4 out of the big five in one day! Justus is very friendly and knowledgeable. He takes all the time we wanted, we spent the entire day with him in the park. Thanks to Justus the safari was an excellent experience we will always remember!

A great safari park that you can round in a (long) day
A great little safari park that you can get round in a day ( a long day). We saw elephants, hippos, crocodiles, giraffe, buffalo, antelope, zebra, and more. No lions or leopards , though. And the boat trip on Lake Ihema was a must - so many birds, including Goliath herons and vultures, with plenty of hippos and crocs, in a human-free paradise.

    Excellent Wildlife Experience
We are a group of wildlife photographers, and thoroughly enjoyed Akagera. Game is not as plentiful as Great Rift Valley or Botswana, but there is so much less traffic. We encountered two other vehicles. Lots of giraffes, wart hogs, crocodiles, hippos, baboons, ungulates, many species of birds. We would like to return and spend more time. Ideally, one day in the south, two in the north

    Great experience
Did a full day safari with a guide and saw a ton of animals: a family of lions, large herds of elephants, hippos in and out of the water, many giraffes, zebras, impalas, topis, various birds , baboons and more. Good weather most of the time, just one rainshower. Also drove up the hills for spectacular views over the lake system. A herd of elephants at one stage were blocking the road and came real close which was quite amazing. Also a very knowledgeable and friendly guide Bosko!

    Just Wow!
This little known park has so much to offer. We spent 3 full days there with our own private guide ($US40/day 6am-6pm). He told us where to drive our own rental car while contacting other guides to know where to go to see certain animals. Our Guide (Jean Dedieu) was fantastic. We saw lots of Zebra, elephants, hippos, buffalo, baboons, giraffe, crocodiles, etc. We got incredibly close to so many animals it was amazing. The sunset boat ride is well worth the time and money. There was lots to see at every turn of the road (dirt and filled with potholes so use a 4X4) and it was not overpopulated with tourists. You can buy a nice hot breakfast at the main registration centre. It really is an amazing place and we would go back in an instant.

Memorable Wildlife Encounter at Akagera National Park
Five years ago, my visit to Akagera National Park was marked by unexpected rainfall that obscured the presence of the Big 5 animals. However, this did not dampen my spirits as I was delighted to witness the beauty of zebras, impalas, and other fascinating wildlife species. Despite missing out on the iconic animals, the park's serene ambiance and the diverse flora and fauna left a lasting impression on me. The experience, though different from what I anticipated, was still enriching and enjoyable, showcasing the park's unique charm beyond the famed Big 5. All thanks to my guide Justine ask for her whenever you visit the park, she is knowledgeable.

We had such a beautiful experience thanks to our guide Firmin, who generously offered an extensive tour of the park, and did his very best to find animals. He is so passionate and friendly, our day was particularly special in his company. Thank you!

I travel all over Africa for safari like Tanzania, Namibian, Uganda, South Africa, Zambia, Botswana, …. And I never had such a bad experience like here. We been driving for game ride for 4 days and didn’t see too many animal. The only one day that we spent over 12 hours in the car we got to see some animals. No leopards no lions at all. ( online they promote that they have so much animals)
The roads are very rough. It wasn’t even the rain season and more than 8 roads been closed.
Some of the roads probably closed for a while. Because all you can see is wild grass growing on them. I feel the park don’t maintains the road which they should do since people pay a lots of money to come all the way here, plus pay for permit and lounge.
If you come to see a zebras this is the place for you. Better to go to the zoo.
I Definitely not recommended at all, wast of time….

Hired a local guide. We saw a large variety of wildlife--elephants, rhinos, baboon, crocodile, zebra, impala... sadly, no lions. An experience of a lifetime!

Saw 4 of the big 5 animals... Plus tons of other safari animals, like Zebra, Gazelles, Warthogs, Baboons, etc. Park is well-cared for; bathrooms are very clean. Food is delicious. Gift shop is awesome.
